Xbox360 without HDTV

Well I wanna get an Xbox360 but I DO NOT have the money for an HDTV what kind of quality loss will I have without an HDTV or is playing with an HDTV just a bonus. If I do play without an HDTV what normal TV should I get?
 
It's similar to the difference in playing a game in 1280x1024 versus 800x600 on a PC. That would be the main quality loss, resolution.

XBOX 360 will still look incredible on a regular TV, and is definitely worth getting. I'd advise using svideo, though, if using a regular TV.
 
your going to be seeing a 720p image min 2xaa downscaled to 480, which you loose some detail but your still not going to have very bad jaggies cause that res being downscaled to your res will create a sort of super sample AA effect, it should look just fine on SDTV's just less sharp

thats differnt then seeing a 800x600 image vs a higher, because its differnt downscaleing then rendering at a lower res from the start

you will scale down to standard format. tremendous loss. i've seen the demos
around town and the console produces amazing HD game play. the game demos
have been less than spectacular but the 360's future is tremendous.

what is your budget ?
 
 
xbox360 on standard def will have noticeable jaggies, and overall will not look that impressive. It will look marginally better than current gen, but largely you need an HDTV to appreciate the power of the system. Some games look better than others on standard def, NBA2k6 is supposedly awful on SDTV.
 
It will still look alot better than the current Xbox. HDTV is not by any means required. Hell, you can play some original xbox games on an HDTV but they still look just fine on a regular TV.
 
That link is an awesome comparison...if it would just work. They must be getting slammed.

Apart from not owning a HDTV, I was actually kind of suprised by how good the 360 looked with the VGA cables.
 
I'll be hooking it up to my CRT. For a sec there, I was afraid my 20" SDTV was gonna cause some damage. But my 21" CRT will do just fine :D

Resolution is HARDLY the defining factor in deciding graphics...
 
i wouldn't buy an xbox 360 if i didn't have an HDTV, becuz it doesn't look even close to as good

It has a lot to do with it, and downscaling the graphics does introduce jaggies and generally makes it look much lower quality. Just go look at the mouse over comparison between 480 and 720 at gamespot, the difference is HUGE.
 
yes if you dont have a hdtv dont buy the 360.. 360 if only for hi-def, without it it sucks. Its like playing a pc on a old tv.
 
xbox360 on a regular tv will look better than a xbox or ps2....

so why are you guys automatically saying don't get the xbox360.

Even with lower resolutions the textures/polygon count/bumpmapping will be far better with the 360. Then when the guy is able to upgrade his TV he'll get yet another jump.

It's really too bad that you have no idea what you're talking about...

Buy an X360 if you think the games are going to be fun to play. They will look better than Xbox games on a standard TV, and that really is just fine.
 
Think of it this way: when going from PS1 to PS2, it wasn't HD.......SO......which looked better, PS1 or PS2?......exactly..... ;) :cool:




To explain a little more, graphics and resolution are two very different beasts. Xbox 360 games running 480i or p will look a hell of a lot better than xbox1 games look on the same resolution...get it? You don't need high definition for the graphics to look better because the resolution has nothing to do with the actual graphics. High def just makes everything clearer, and the details finer....but the grahics will be the same.

Same here, i wouldnt have enough money to buy more controlers so i would be mostly playing SP or online, so i would have the whole sceen to myself, even 2 player wouldnt be that bad, since you are so close to it.

QFT. There are some real dolts in here. Can't blame 'em, though, thanks to MS' marketing strategy ("HD people!! buy an HDTV so you can experience the ULTIMATE RUSH!"). Don't look at internet screenshots to compare resolutions. Of COURSE it will look worse that way. Fortunately for regular people sitting back on the couch, the difference is only in sharpness, NOT polys or effects. "jaggies" aren't happening, either, unless you're playing at 480i on a 65" screen, stretched to widescreen. If you've got a plain old SDTV with s-video or component, it will look just fine, believe me. Then one day, in future, when you decide to upgrade to HD, you'll get a nice little boost in sharpness, right?
 
I could be off a little and with that recent rumor about PGR 3 being lower res I have a quick question. I know microsoft has stated that all their games would be HD resolution, but have they stated if the developer is allowed to cheat it and and just upscale the resolution of the game or if the games native resolution has to be 1280x whatever?
 
*removed flame*, here take a screen shot on your pc on a game running 640x480 4xaa, next take a screenshot of 1280x720 4xaa(960 if you want)and DOWNSCALE THE IMAGE TO 480, its gonna look a HELL of alot better

everything is rendered internal of the 360 at 1280x720 and then downscaled
 
Yep, I agree with ballz (lol), the X360 will still look great, whether it's running at 480i or 1080i. Sit back on your couch, relax, and enjoy the first step in the next-gen console race. When/if you get an HD set, you can worry about spending an extra $50 on the adapter for the visual boost, but for now, you're still going to get next-gen visuals, just minus a little bit of detail/sharpness. No biggie, especially considering your TV is less than 40" in size.

If you have a computer monitor, you can play your games at higher rez on your monitor. There is a thread in here some where that has a picture of where you can select your resolution if you have it attached to a computer monitor.

That's a great link(s) comparing the quality. Never was into consoles, so i never knew anything about 720p, composite, etc. thanks.



Now, I have one question: how does dvi play into this? Or would this also go into the category of VGA?
 
I have a 50" mitsubishi rear projection TV that supports 480p, and i have a 27" panasonic flat tube tv with component inputs but no HDTV and I couldn't notice the difference between my non hd and 480p. I'm sure i'll notice a difference when i get my VGA cables and hook up this monitor tho.
 
It doesn't have a DVI output by default, though MS may one day manufacture one. VGA is pretty much the same, though, just not quite as clear.

Yes you can hook this console up to a PC monitor... but if you've got a 25"+ TV, why would you? For extra clarity? I prefer extra size.

Isn't there an HDMI cable? If so, you can use an HDMI/DVI cable to connect a DVI monitor/TV...
 
No HDMI (yet). Just composite, S-Video, Component, and VGA. At least as far as I know.
