MaxConsole has pictures of an updated heatsink on the Xbox 360’s GPU that now includes a heatpipe extension for added cooling power. I think this move by Microsoft is long overdue and, with any luck, it will cut down on the overheating problems that have been plaguing some owners. If all else fails, you can always do what we did and water cool your 360.

So whenever these hit the market, is there going to be an official announcement on them or are they just going to be "phased" in?

Probably phased in I'm sure so people won't hold out on waiting for one with the added cooling if they plan on making the purchase.

They always improve things a year or two later that's common sense to begin with imo, sucks people have to suffer lots of dead consoles before things are improved. :(

Yup its like when someone gets killed in an intersection thats when they finally add a light there. Microsoft is just trying to cut too many corners so they used a cheap heatsink and it fried tons of consoles. Finally they are starting to see how many people are losing their consoles due to be fried or overheated. Atleast somethings being done now:eek:

I wonder if the elites have them or will be the first to get them?

Let me check

*nope* My Elite has standard cooling. I imagine MS will just start rolling ut this cooling on all 360s across the board. I'll double check with MS on this though.

That heat pipe looks to be a little close to the RAM. It also looks like the heat will be sucked right into the CPU HS too. Hopefully this doesn't cause any new problems. Maybe once the GPU and CPU are at 65nm they will not need such drastic cooling measures.

Well, the GPU cooler has always been on the wimpy side, a heatpipe would have been the best solution from the get go. This one just adds cooling capacity to the existing console without having to redesign the layout inside the box.

It took MS a year and 7 months to decide to add additional cooling to the 360?!?!?

That or you could just place your 360 horizontally...
Seems to me *most* (not all, Most) of the cooling issues (Red lights of doom) that I have heard of were where people had placed their 360 vertically...Thereby blocking 1/2 the holes on the console.
I have had one since last November, Always had it horizontal, never had an issue.

thank christ, I'm bored of sending 360's back now.

I'm just waiting for the elite to come out in Europe and will just get that as opposed to the shoddy seconds I keep getting.

My XBOX 360 lasted 10 months and I didnthave it standing vertically. I just hope Microsoft announces this new cooling if or when it is released becauuse im going to wait for either a price reduction or this new cooling to happen before I buy a replacement.
