Hey,

I looked fairly hard for an answer to this question but I wasn't able to get a good one. Basically what I want to do is get my XBOX and my VCR connected to my computer so I could watch VCR tapes on my computer and I would also like to play my XBOX on my computer.

Is their something that I could get that would allow me to do this? The one that I've been looking at so far is a Plextor ConvertX.

Any feedback here would be awesome!

Thanks!

The card I have now is a Leadtek WinFast TV2000 XP Deluxe. I'm pretty certain that I would need RCA connections to do the trick wouldn't I?

Thanks!

I got that card a while ago too cause it was cheap.. i've had way too many problems with it, from image quality, to installation problems, it's not a good card better off spending the extra for a quality tuner card.

For xbox, you won't want a hardware encoder like the convertx, or hauppauge PVR series. I know the hauppauge PVR series introduce a 1-3 second lag due to the encoding, and expect the plextor would do the same. Would make playing xbox totally frustrating.

No matter what you pick, XBOX/PS2 pretty much require S-VIDEO to get a reasonable picture. Composite will make you send the card back.

I use a Prolink PCI Video Capture Card, Model "PixelView XCapture(PV-CX881P)" -RETAIL
for playing ps2/xbox. its pretty cheap - $30.

I also use dscaler (www.dscaler.com) with that card to deinterlace and clean the picture up greatly.

In addition i have a hauppauge pvr2 usb, which i would reccomend or a pvr150/pvr250 for recording video. It records directly into mpeg2 which is handy if you want to burn off dvds. This i use for recording TV. It doesnt work for gaming - too much lag.

Ya I'm not a very big fan of it either. The software is a nightmate too.
My friend has an ASUS TV FM card and the software on it is crazy nice.
It's nice to know that other people are having the same problem as I am.
But ya, I can't really complain because it was crazy cheap.

Awesome info! Thanks!
Do you think that instead of buying that other card that I'll be able to use the S-VIDEO off my ATI 9800 PRO 256MB or will I experiance lag with that? Is the S-VIDEO connector that comes right off the stock XBOX cables good enough?

Thanks again!

I think the svideo on your 9800 is for output, not input. Im probably using the stock svideo cables, not sure though.

Audio on the prolink hooks into the line-in on your soundcard, it doesnt have a seperate input. No tvtuner on it either.

Do you think the ProLink would still work if I plugged my VCR into it and then plugged my XBOX into the VCR?

Thanks!

probably, but vcr's dont usually work with svideo, so it will probbaly look like crap. Id reccomend a video switcher, or vcr with composite and xbox with component.

edit: XBOX with SVIDEO, they dont make reasonably priced component capture boards.

I think what I'll end up doing is using the Leadtek card for the XBOX and if it's too slow I'll buy the ProLink.

For the VCR I'll get the Plextor ConvertX. I can get it for C$99.

If you think I'm making a bad choice, let me know!
Thanks for all your help ambientZ and all other's! I owe you guys endless hours of skipped classes and good times.
