What I have already...
a computer
x-fi xtream music with DD/DTS decoding
sennheiser PC350 headphones

What I want to do is use my x-fi card to decode and use its surround technology to get 5.1 out of my stereo headphones. I do this currently with my computer easy enough. but I need to do it with my xbox. I dont have the I/O device Creative make for my xfi card. So as I can see my options are to buy the I/O bay for $70, or find a optical input card (if they make them) for my comp and hopefully my xfi card would decode that for me.

what do you guys think? My setup now sounds great. and I dont have money for the expensive mixamp. but if I can get this working for under $50 I would make it happen.
 
No point for 5.1 for headphones. Just set the Xbox to stereo and enjoy.
 
? there is a point. My entire thread is based on the fact that I would like surround sound. I would like better positioning in my xbox games. i works wonders for me with my computer. would just like the same experience with my xbox.

Xbox in stereo mode should downmix the 5.1 to 2.0.
 
I get that 450. I want to emulate surround sound on my headphones using my xfi card in my computer. I realise i can listen to my xbox in stereo mode. I dont want to do that.
 
i use an earforce dss that connects to my xbox via an optical cable that has dolby headphone built into it, i realize that it won't be using your pc sound card but the dobly headphone processes 5.1/7.1 simulation into stereo headphones. (its similar to an astro mixamp but a little cheaper)

the only other option would be to use an rca to 3.5mm adapter to connect your xbox to the input jack on your pc and setting your pc to process the signal from the input jack and just plug your headphones into an output on your pc, you would have to run your mic directly to your controller though, i made an adapter to do this out of an old xbox headset and a female jack from radio shack but you can buy these adapters for a couple bucks online. there are a couple pictures of the adapter in my headphone mod thread http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1548594

the mixamp and the earforce dss use an optical input and spit out a stereo signal in simulated surround sound, i'm unsure if there will be a quality difference between using a 3.5mm stereo on the input instead of the 5.1 optical signal, i wouldn't imagine so becasue its still being processed to simulated surround either way, but i can say from experience that using the optical and a dolby headphone processor you will not be disappointed, it works very well.
 
thank you. it sounds like the Turtle beach device does the exact same thing that the a40 setup does but isn't increadable over price. The turtle beach setup is deff cheaper. wonder if there are even cheaper devices that do the same thing?
 
not really, the dss is the cheapest i have found that has the dolby headphone feature, allthe other devices like mixamp or the jvc-sudh1 are more expensive.
