XBOX or PS3 through computer Audio?

Anyone have any stories to share or wisdom to impart regarding console-to-computer hookups, either Xbox360 or PlayStation3?

My intention here is to avoid having to get an AV receiver or an external audio decoder. I'd like to plug it into my computer monitor and speakers (without having to plug/unplug anything every time I want to use either console or computer).

It looks possible to do HDMI > DVI cable from console to LCD monitor directly for digital 1080 resolution display (monitor has dual DVI inputs so that I can keep the computer hooked up at same time). For audio I was considering optical toslink from console into my htomega sound card (which has optical toslink in and out ports), which is currently running analog out to the speakers.

My main question is regarding the audio (which is why this is posted in computer audio thread)
 
While I personally have not done this I don't see why it wouldn't work. I cannot comment on the PS3, but I know that the XBox will do both PCM and 5.1 optical out, as I have used this in my home theatre av reciever while doing HDMI to the TV. Since your sound card has a toslink in it will be up to the sound card on how it outputs everything, but even the simplest tos in would handle PCM, and if it didn't I would be shocked. So as long as the sound card can select source and switch to tos in as source you should be ok.
 
i do ps3 optical out -> xf-i on pc -> analog out -> 2.1 speaker or headphone
i just had to enable optical input through console
 
Another option is to get a 1/8" coupler and a RCA->1/8" adapter and connect the speakers directly to the RCA audio out on either the PS3 or 360. This way the computer does not have to be on for you to get audio. Just make sure you have volume control somewhere in the middle, otherwise if you hook up your console directly to a pair of headphones, prepare to blow your eardrums out.

A HDMI->DVI cable will work, as will HDMI->DVI adapters.
