Pst... gaming is about games, not technology. Despite Sony's PS2 being the most inferior hardware of this generation, it has arguably the best games.

Meh...it has the most games. They're not necessarily the best.

Xenon is expected to launch in 2005

Xenon is designed for high-definition output.

As with Xbox, Xenon is designed to be a multiplayer console. It has built-in networking support including an Ethernet 10/100-BaseT port. It supports up to four controllers. From an audio/video standpoint, Xenon will support all the same formats as Xbox, including multiple high-definition formats up through 1080i, plus VGA output.

Xenon console includes standard USB 2.0 ports. This feature allows the console to potentially host storage devices, cameras, microphones, and other devices.

Storage
The Xenon console is designed around a larger world view of storage than Xbox was. Games will have access to a variety of storage devices, including connected devices (memory units, USB storage) and remote devices (networked PCs, Xbox Live™). At the time of this writing, the decision to include a built-in hard disk in every Xenon console has not been made. If a hard disk is not included in every console, it will certainly be available as an integrated add-on component.

The Xenon industrial design process is well under way, but the final look of the box has not been determined. The Xenon console will be smaller than the Xbox console.
The standard Xenon controller will have a look and feel similar to the Xbox controller. The primary changes are the removal of the Black and White buttons and the addition of shoulder buttons. The triggers, thumbsticks, D-pad, and primary buttons are essentially unchanged. The controller will support vibration.

Xenon has the processing power to emulate Xbox.

Just a few things that I found appealing to me. I will be wetting myself everyday with anticipation!

I don't know why so many people say the Xbox controller is good. It sucks donkey cock to put it nicely. There is no excuse these days for not having at least 6 buttons on the face in an arcade layout (slightly curved or not). The GC controller is also a total joke. The only halfway decent one is the PS2's.

Waaay back in '95 I bought an SNES controller with 6 buttons on the face, leaving shoulder buttons intact. It was perfect for fighters and anything else.

Had all the face buttons on the N64 controller been the same size, it would have been the best controller of all time.

I can't stand the small size of the PS2 controller or the v2 Xbox controller, and you are right...the Cube controller is a stinking joke.

I don't like the analog sticks in the PS2 controller either....too flimsy and not enough resistance.

Man, I love the Xbox Controller-S. Perfect size and shape, IMO.

The PS2 controller is OK, but the analog sticks don't feel right at all. They're at an awkward position to begin with, not to mention the fact that they offer next to no resistance and they're extremely close together.

I dont care how good the graphics are going to be on the Xbox2, if they dont include VGA support then I dont see any use of having all that power. TV resolutions are just to low as it is with XBox 1. I play alot of racing games and it is hard to see oncoming trafic and turns on a tv. I currently use a 20 inch S-Video TV and plan on getting an adapter to use a commputer monitor. I cant aford a HDTV just yet, but they are getting cheaper everyday. But it would still be nice to hook it up to a 21" Sony G500 and a set of Logitech Z-680s.

Good point! That is one thing the Dreamcast had (imho) over the other consoles: factory VGA support. The majority of people who will buy xbox2/next dont have a hdtv capable set, but I'll bet they do have a computer monitor capable of doing the same/similar resolutions. The dreamcast games I played hooked into a computer monitor looked a ton better than on the tv...why has no other console done this since? I know that someone has made adapters for the xbox, but I have only heard of one that is supposed to be any good and even then you cant see all of the dashboard at one time...

i should try that (considering i still play DC) but you would need an extra monitor laying around and i think most people wouldn't have one or buy one or play on tv's greater then 19" so its really not something worthwhile plus its probably cheaper to not have native vga support at all. Also for say 4 player games like halo having 4 people sit around a computer monitor sounds a little crazy, everyone would be on top of each other.

You know what would be cool if it were integrated into the XB2?

Wireless networking.

No more freaking half-assed adaptors.

dualshock has a better button layout but s controller has better analog control for fps.

I'm sorry but any dual joy stick controller has shit for controls in and FPS compared to keyboard/mouse. A console is NO place for a FPS game.

I can feel the *insert Halo2/Xbox rant* coming already :)

Which is why the Xbox 2 will come with standard USB ports so you can plug in the KB/Mouse of your choosing. ;-)

Honestly, I don't mind the dual shock controller on the Xbox, but I'm a LOT faster with the Keyboard and Mouse.

I don't know why they couldn't have made a keyboard and mouse set for the Xbox like they did for the PS2. The plugs are just standard USB with a different connector. Oh well...

It has the most games, yes. Coincidentally, it also happens to have the best games. I agree that the two are unrelated. However, in this case, the PS2 has both.

Even if they'd just make the network adapter a swappable part, and allow you to add wireless, I'd be fine with that.

Of course, they're talking about having Xboxes with the hard drive add-on already built-in... I'd love if they'd have a base Xbox and a deluxe model with hard drive and wireless built-in. I'd be all over the deluxe in a heartbeat.

Both points are moot, as both really boil down to personal taste. But if you look at it just on the surface...then yes the PS2 does have both. It stands to reason that it does so just be sheer numbers alone. The more games available, the more chance to have a larger amount of higher rated games.

To me, the Xbox wins, with the PS2 coming in a close second, and the Cube....well, that just doesn't exsist in my world.

Amen brother. Make me pay more, fine, but don't make me buy aftermarket.

The reason why they didn't create a keyboard and mouse for the Xbox is because of Live play. If there were people with keyboards and mice on there, the gamepad people wouldn't stand a chance. So, if you wanted to play on Live, you would be forced to use a keyboard and mouse. And if that happens then you no longer have console play. It turns out to be no different than PC gaming, and that is that last thing we want for the console.

Could there be a low end, middle, and high end xbox?

What is the reasoning behind that?

I can't wait until this thing comes out.

we might actually get to see a decent rare game too on the xbn by the time next gen systems reach maturity. hah.

Its not a case of performance but of functionality. The most expensive one wont play the games at higher res etc but just offer other functions like DVD playback etc. Whereas the low end one wiill only play the games

They will ALL have the same gaming ability at all the different resolutions that the XBN supports. Which is RCA and all the way through to built in VGA support and 1080i.

If Microsoft launces the next xbox and it is not as powerful as PS3 then they might as well not release one at all. From what im hearing they are considering releasing it up to a year ealier than PS3 which i think would be suicide for them. Maybe, MAYBE a whole year will allow them to build up a good collection of games and since the PS2 is so old give them good sales, but one of the main reasons everyone buys an Xbox now is because its so much more powerful (and the hard drive- taking that out is another mistake)

PS3 will have Bluray technology in it - imagine those games

Xbox2 needs to be more powerful its a requirement

Actually, Xbox2 would still have to compete with PS2 for new customers. Which would you rather buy--the Xbox2 for $300 or the PS2 for $99 (assuming Sony responds to the Xbox2's launch with a sufficient price cut)? Most people are going for the PS2, because it already has all the games they want and it costs 1/3 the price.

No one buys a console because it's more powerful. PS2 is the least powerful console of this generation, but it owns most of the market.

PS3 will have Bluray technology in it - imagine those games

And Xbox2 will probably use HD-DVD. Blu-Ray won't make a difference in the quality of the games, only the art--and it's hard to see developers filling up 30GB on HD-DVD, let alone 50GB on Blu-Ray. Because 3D has come so far, games aren't as FMV-reliant as they were in the PSX days, so just about any next-gen game will use the storage space for 480p/720i/720p/1080i/1080p compatibility. This goes for PS3 and Xbox2 games.

Xbox2 needs to be more powerful its a requirement

Given that it's a next-generation console, being more powerful is kind of a given. Xbox2 needs to be fun enough to be worth the choice over the PS2, and then it nneeds to be more fun than the PS3 after its launch.

I just hope the next XBox has mouse and keyboard support natively so you can play a FPS on it and not feel like a gimp.

Sony has not decided on using Blu-Ray for the PS3, they haven't said no...but they haven't said yes either.

As far as XBX using HD-DVD, nope. They have already said they will use standard DVD to deliver the games on.

As far as native support for keyboard and mouse, sort-of. They have already said that the controllers will use standard USB2 as a connection, so that means that you can plug any USB2 conneciton device into it, like a mouse and keyboard, it is up to the game makers to support the mapping of controls to a Keyboard and mouse, not the Xbox.

i really think microsoft will pump up the price on this one and try to make it nearly an htpc...

supposedly 3 versions will come out. one your basic no hd budget xbox, a hard drive version, and then one that also functions as a pc

CNet: Sony's PS3 to use Blu-Ray Disc.

How much do you want to bet you're wrong about Xbox2 not using HD-DVD, considering a) Microsoft has publically stated that they support HD-DVD, and b) almost nothing has been officially revealed about the console and we're just speculating based on trends?

Are you sure that the XBN will use standard USB plugs to connect, or is the interface USB2.0? The Xbox uses a standard USB interface with proprietary connectors for all peripherals, so that could be what is hinted at there.

Dang. I was hoping that the PS3 wouldn't use Blu-Ray. They can't fill up 9 gigs now, what are they going to fill up 50 with? Also, the built in copy protection of Blu-Ray is horrible. But with Sony putting all there beans in Blu-Ray, it does make sense for them to use the PS3 as a 'gate-way drug' of sorts for the acceptence of Blu-Ray. With most movie studios supporting HD-DVD (minus Sony and Disney), I can see how MS would want HD-DVD in their box. But with EA and some others backing Blu-Ray, it will be interesting to see how this all pans out.

Anyway, as to your comment on XBN using HD-DVD. I will quote:

Xenon Hardware Overview

By Pete Isensee, Development Lead, Xbox Advanced Technology Group

From an audio/video standpoint, Xenon will support all the same formats as Xbox, including multiple high-definition formats up through 1080i, plus VGA output.

The Xenon game disc drive is a 12× DVD, with an expected outer edge throughput of 16+ MB/sec. Latency is expected to be in the neighborhood of 100 ms. The media format will be similar to Xbox, with approximately 6 GB of usable space on the disk. As on Xbox, media will be stored on a single side in two 3 GB layers.

And seeing as of September 5th, 2002, there are no less than FOUR candidate specifications that have been proposed to the DVD Forum for high-definition DVD (HD-DVD), and the XBN being so close to release....it makes you wonder if they will or not. I am guessing not, also realizing that new HD-DVD discs won't be playable in older (read: not native HD-DVD players) DVD players (unless they are special hybrid discs in both HD and SD format). Also, HD discs will not play on existing players. Even red-laser discs, which the player may be able to physically read, require new circuitry to decode and display the high-def video, which would add to the cost of the XBN. Red-laser discs can play on DVD PCs with the right software (for example, HD versions of DVDs using Microsoft HD-WMV were available in 2003). Blue-laser discs require new optical assemblies and controllers. HD players will undoubtedly read existing DVDs, so your collection will not become obsolete when you buy a new player.

Like you said, a lot of it is speculation, but also keep in mind that a lot has been announced by those people working on/with the XBN, but we won't know for sure until E3 rolls around in May again. All our questions (that we have now) will be answered there.

I suppose I should have typed USB2.0, but instead I typed USB2, sorry about that. The XBN will use a standard USB2.0 connection interface. MS said it themselves:

Which means that you will be able to use the XBN controller on your PC, and a keyboard an mouse on your XBN. Of course you the game makes have to be able to let you map the buttons or the keyboard, but that is minor so I don't see why they wouldn't.

Looks good, although I'm not buying one until the modding scene gets going on it.. I have a modded xbox now and I would never go without one again.

Content to make HD resolutions look better. We're finally moving out of the age of low-resolution textures. This next generation is about high-resolution gaming.

I really hope Xbox2 doesn't use VGA, of all things.. It needs to use HDMI/DVI for TV hookups. Okay, maybe that PC version can use VGA as a secondary connector.

Don't forget whichever studio Sony bought. UMD isn't getting support, so Sony's already moved on to Blu-Ray. Personally, I hope Blu-Ray wins at least for the PC. Talk about your backup devices.

Given how the market is working right now, "You're using X so I'm going to use Y" is about all the logic you need to decipher the next-generation. Microsoft is using ATi? Sony hires nvidia. Sony's using Blu-Ray? Microsoft will probably use HD-DVD.

It really is all speculative, I agree, but given that the next-generation is more about getting consoles to take advantage of HDTV, I don't see how Microsoft can pull that off without using HD-DVD. Xenosaga, a 25 hour RPG with above-average graphics, uses a dual-layer DVD. Storage space requirements are about to jump up. I can't see HD-DVD backers not pushing Microsoft to use the Xbox2 as HD-DVD's leverage point to counter Sony using PS3 as a leverage point for Blu-Ray.

Good point. In the end I will probably get both anyway. Especially if Sony puts out another ICO....dang that game ate up all my time.

But, now I guess I just have to wait and see. :(

I am so glad I have broadband...I am going to be watching every stream and downloading every video that interests me from E3. :D

They've got an unofficial sequel in the works right now. It has the same artistic style and an upgraded graphics engine. At one time it was called "Wanda and the Colossus". I'm not sure if it still has the same name though.

There is a "Wanda and the Colossus" nearing release, so it is most likely the same thing.

heres a few things i do know. ps3 will definitly use blu-ray. as one of the leading and biggest pushers of blu-ray, what would be the easiest way to bring blu-ray into the homes of millions almost instantaneously with the launch of ps3? take a wild guess. and production of blu-ray discs wont make the price of games any higher-the whole fabrication process is about the same, if not a little cheaper than current dvd technology. xbox 2 will definitly use hd-dvd, as they state that they support it already, plus what better to do than incorporate hd-dvd players into their systems to be future safe? also, if xbox 2 has built-in vga output, than consider the system bought by me! which system i'll get will totally depend on everything. i planned on getting ps2 and my mind was set on it for the longest time. after playing both xbox and ps2's of my friends/reletives, i decided to go for the xbox...what an extreme turn of events! it all just depends on which one appeals to me the most, and i have to say, as of what i know now, the xbox2 looks to be selling itself to me, but who knows, one of those dramatic changes may occur!!
