Hopefully this will be an easy question for someone. My son's xbox 360 died (getting video pixelation type crap like it overheated or something). He just got a 12 month xbox live card for christmas. If he gets a new xbox will he be able to transfer his xbox live account to the new machine?

Yeah, he just needs to use the "recover a gamertag" feature.

If you're returning the console to MS for a replacement, make sure to remove the HDD to keep his save games. If for some reason you are not returning it and buying another, you can transfer off all of your sons save games with a USB memory stick. Insert it into the 360 and you will be prompted to format a 16GB partition the 360 will use. Once you have that you can go to System Settings > Memory then select the data you want and use the Move option, then pointing it to the memory stick.

But if you're getting the unit replaced, just remove the HDD and put it on the new 360 and thats all you'll have to do. If you have questions, contact support @ 1 800 4 MY XBOX.

And yes, as stated using the recover gamertag feature on (any, new or old) the new console will download his profile, his achievements, game history and license files associated with any DLC or XBLA games he has purchased with that account. DLC or XBLA arcade games can be easily re downloaded to a new device, with no charge since you own that content.

Good luck.

and if needing a new xbox, you would want to do the licence transfer (does the recover gametag automaticlly do that?)
