Just when you thought no one gave a crap about this anymore, Resolutiongate rears its ugly head again. :D

"I think it's a perception challenge, absolutely," he said. "If you put third-party games side-by-side that are running at slightly different resolutions or frame rates, then unless you are using a screen that's more than 60 inches big, I defy you to really see the difference. I personally struggle to see the difference.

You wouldn't really see a difference between the PS4 and Xbone, but the same can be said between games on the 360 vs Xbone. This is because games are made for the 360/PS3 first and once ported to Xbone, just get a texture upgrade.

Once games are built specifically for the Xbone and PS4, the differences will be bigger. Everyone complains about 1080P and 60fps but once games make good use of that power then the resolutions will drop and 30fps will be the norm.

Sorry, but 1080p 60fps is not going to happen on Triple-A titles on either the Xbone or the PS4. Since most console gamers are either ignorant or uninformed, they don't care about 30fps or 60fps. Most of them would claim to not notice a difference anyway. So long as it doesn't affect PC games, I don't care. Let them be happy with their purchases.

I have a PS4 and an Xbox One. Could be the games out there so far, but the PS4 looks significantly better and cost me $100 less. 1080, 720, whatever, PS4 looks better. I don't care about the Kinect. Sooo... yeah, that's my own opinion from personal experience.

Worth noting, I have a 65" TV, I'm sure that makes it much easier to see the differences.

I've always been anti Sony, from PS1 straight through the PS3 and was on the XBox bandwagon from day 1 of the original. But I don't know WTF MS was thinking this round. Swung for the king of media center fences and whiffed?

My projection screen is 84 inches, I guess I would. I would only buy an XBone if they made a decent Kinect game where I can destory cities as a monster with a decent level of accuracy for movements. The rancor game in Star Wars Kinect was very disappointing, if it tracked better I would have loved it. Someone should buy the rights to Rampage to make that into a Kinect game.

I agree. About 80 millions 360s compared to 5 million xbox ones. Who would you target?

They will eventually. Optimization will go a long way to make the game look better and run smoother. Just don't expect PC level looks at 1080p/60fps

"gate" really?

Seconded.

The Watergate scandal was over 40 years ago. Even when it was still relevant and people still cared, adding "-gate" to anything to make it sound scandalous was not clever or amusing. I wish the media would let that cliche die already.

Really?

My son has both and, for the first few weeks they were out we thought it was funny to have people over and try to guess which was which on a 60" Samsung. It was HILARIOUS watching fanboys pick the wrong version. :D

Adults can actually make a drinking game out of it. Pick the "wrong" console and you have to do a shot.

Biggest problem now? No games. Both are just collecting dust in my son's room :(

Yup, just give them some time because they will get better at trying to extract the last bit of power possible. Look at some of the X360 games like Gears of War 3 as you could have never guessed on 11/22/2005 when the X360 launched that there would ever be such a good looking game possible for it.

I think the gate the poster was referring to was Bill Gates being associated with MS and MS puts out XBone.;)

The problem isn't the resolution, its the untapped power that remains. The fact the XB1 runs at a lower res indicates it will have a MUCH harder time coping 4-5 years down the road. Essentially, the PS4 has power to spare and the XB1 doesn't, which will likely show in late-generation cross-platform titles.

All I know is that I am a upper 30s d.i.n.k with plenty of money to spend... who almost begs for reasons to buy new cool stuff and neither seem to be able to do it.

Granted my GF would kill me if we lost access to her lego game collection... why can't they put out a PS4/XB1 version of them and make more money?

Steve, I'm able to see dust particles more easily on the pictured XBox, so the PS4 wins said benchmark, where lower is better.

But I don't know WTF MS was thinking this round. Swung for the king of media center fences and whiffed?

I don't think the addition of the media center stuff had any impact on the RAM and CPU decisions they made. All MS was thinking here was, "Hey the X360 was a giant success, devs and gamers both loved it, let's do the exact same thing again except give it more memory and make it faster cause Sony's just gonna release a Cell 2.0 giant mess anyway."

The only reason the XB1 is receiving the hardware criticism they're getting is cause Sony made better decisions this time around. MS took the X360 hardware choices and modernized them, Sony started from scratch.

Second Son and Destiny Beta both looks years beyond COD, Titanfall, NBA 2K, etc. Second Son is probably the only game I have right now that looks any better than last gen.

Is this really a wise thing for an exec to say? One can take it as a straight admission of performance inferiority.

Well if that is your argument, then both consoles are doomed. Neither company decided to try and beat the current gen graphics cards.

Relatively speaking, they will both be outdated faster than the 360/ps3.

My guess is that do to the easier to code architecture, xbox one and ps4 will reach optimization faster than last gen. I saw someone tossing around the term that optimization on the console effectively doubles its power when you are looking at GPU Flops. If that's true a fully optimized ps4 at 3.6 TFLOPS (1.84 TFLOPS x 2) still lags behind a 290x at 5.6 TFLOPS.

I don't see them getting the life out of this gen that they did as of last gen. I think that's why MS went for the entertainment angle as almost an excuse for the low power. Due to both manufactures going this route, hopefully we'll see a new console in 5 years.

haha, I love the "Now that console is covered in dust cause we don't ever use it." line. I use my XB1 every day, and I'm always wiping the dust off it. Know why? It's a freaking console and it sits there and does nothing! It doesn't move! IT'S ALWAYS GOING TO BE COVERED IN DUST!!!!

The fact that Destiny is capped at 30fps on ps4/xbox1 sucks tremendously though.

I don't think there's any point in trying to argue their performance is on par. The numbers don't lie. The best they can do is argue that it's "good enough". But for me, what they need to do is is release some great exclusives that prove this. Actions speak louder.

Seriously, MS just needs to enforce a gag order on their execs. They are quickly following Sony's footsteps for Execs saying mind blowingly stupid shit. It isn't a perception problem, its a hardware problem and it is a fact. That said, it is a console and honestly it isn't that big of a deal. Did the Wii have a perception problem due to being under powered? No..no it didn't. Nintendo just marketed the machine exactly for what it is and sold the hell out of it. MS has a great device with the XB1 if they just shut up, stop trying to make it what it isn't and listen to their damn customers (something they seem to struggle with).

As Steve mentioned, the major problem the PS4 and XB1 both have is a lack of games. Now that isn't stopping me from enjoying my PS4, but It still gets less use than my PS3 by far. I'm waiting on a XB1 until there are meaningful games for it, only got the PS4 because it was a gift and honestly it is more than just games for me.

I laugh every time I walk by the Microsoft store at the mall with their Forza demo running and the car looks like it's moving at 55mph while the speedometer is showing nearly double. Clearly a performance handicap.

I'd prefer 60, but with a gamepad the input device is the limiting factor more than the FPS. 60 FPS is much more important with a mouse and keyboard, imo. Granted I'm a crappy console player and above average PC player.

^^ This x 1,000,000. I bought an xbox one simply because I rather MS exclusives over Sony exclusives. Do I regret my decision. Nope. I have loved Forza and RYSE (even though the reviews are rough).

Now do I wish I would have waited a year since there has been NO OTHER GOOD EXCLUSIVES. Yes. I would have saved about $200. Since i've beat RYSE and grew tired of Forza my xbox has sat there and done nothing.

I don't think that's a performance handicap as the description for every single racing game ever.

I don't think that's a performance handicap as much as the description for every single racing game ever.
Agreed. Perception of speed in 3D projection is something everyone has struggled with.

Off topic, but remember Burnout Paradise on PC? I recently played that on my 3DTV using Nvidia's 3D mode thingy. I was very impressed with the illusion of speed. Can't wait to give this one a try with Oculus.

Damnit .. Had a post typed out and the forum ate it. So short version .. Hopefully MS takes the hint and develops an Xbox One.2 in a few years. Keep the UI, keep everything. It'd simply be a subplant of the current gen. Games would work with both, devs would just need to develop two gfx setting presets that get auto-detected. This could be in place of their usual every few years hardware revision or shrinkage. Games marked with "HD" would be ready to go. Possibly older games can get patches.

Oh possibly, this would put Sony is a difficult spot, MS has lots of cash floating around but Sony has to play it pretty lean for a while. However, all I can think reading this is, "I'd so buy that, my wife would stab me, but I'd so buy it..."

Right. Now explain Titanfall. No please. Go ahead.

Ok ok I will. Right before launch articles were out everywhere about Titanfall can't get above 792p. And a patch is supposed to remove the hardware AA for software based AA which is always proven to be worse.

Like I said in the last article, 4K is taking over a lot faster than anyone expected. Did either console put this in??? Nope cause neither graphics card is able to do it. Drop the fanboy shit. I feel ripped off buying the Xbox 1 and its under powered bullshit specially when its hooked up to a 73" that I am upgrading to a Samsung 4K UHD 78"UH9000 TV by Christmas. Thank god my pc will be able to play games on it. Upscaling by the TV is going to look like shit.

Oh wait, there is hope. I want a Trade-in coupon for at least $200 towards the Xbox 1.5a series 13 Jaguar XTC chip set in two years. Lets build a new one..... http://www.tweaktown.com/news/38997...l-designer-for-a-new-next-gen-xbox/index.html

Thanks to the poster for that link in the other thread on this. Can't find it to give you credit.

How many times are we going to let Microsoft dupe us on systems? How many of you went through 3-7 systems because of RROD on 360? Now this underpowered HTPC. Not me. I might just trade the 360 and Xbox 1 for a PS4 and be done with it. I just want a straight up gaming machine at 1080p for now.

Go ahead and explain what about Titanfall? I was stating that if MS wants to convince anyone they have to make games that prove it, not talk about what they think their system can do. I don't feel I was doing any "fanboy shit".

Neither console is anywhere near powerful enough to play games at 4K. Only SLI equipped PC's would be able to handle fancy modern games at that resolution. There's nothing Sony nor MS could have done to change that. Unless you want to pay $2000 for a Playstation.

That argument bugs me. Lots of guys complaining about the consoles being underpowered. Ok then, what would you have changed to make it better? Keeping in mind that the price has to stay below $500. Go ahead and tell us.

3-7 times and you've duped yourself, I reckon.
