How does the XBox's parts stack up to the hardware available to us consumers?

Given the XBox 360 Specs - what parts would it take to build a PC to match the XBox's performance using today's available parts?

I think you would have to go with dual dual-core processors to make up for the 6 total threads on the Xbox's processor and some nice overclocked RAM. As for the rest of the parts I'm clueless.

I just want to get this out of the way right now: I know most of this had been said before.

You can't really compare the two so easily. The Xbox 360 is a gaming console. A computer is so much more, with the ability to do things consoles were not (word processing and browsing the internet, watching movies and live television, using business applications for work envirnments, and yes, being able to play games and other multimedia).

Another point that should be stated is that the 360 is supposed to be "next gen". While some still argue (and rightly so in some cases) that the 360's graphical capabilities are lacking, there are some good examples out there like Call of Duty 2 or Project Gotham Racing 3. Keep in mind that none of the games at launch are taking advantage of the consoles multi-threading technology, so the graphics should improve (in theory).

All that said, I think an Athlon 64 X2 4800+ with a DFI NF4 SLI-DR Expert board should do some decent FPS. Ohh, and dual 7800 GTX 512MB cards in a kick-ass SLI setup.

Yummy. :D

well i am running a 9800pro 128mb... doesn't the xbox 360 have more power than me?

It's not entirely apples and oranges. If you program the hardware to run apps, what now? It's still a computer. No matter how much MS wants to hide it, it is still a computer. It can be made to run anything, especially if you program it to do something. It's sort of easy to compare the power of the XBox to the PC providing you know what those specifications and numbers are compared to the PC counterpart.

isnt there already a ton of these threads floating around. :(

Point me to them.

I think it's more like comparing Grany Smith Apples to Macintosh Apples. The XBox is basically a PC and made up of next-gen PC parts.

I saw some of the XBox 360 games on display and was not impressed with the graphics. I do hope newer games and playing in High Def work out for the best. I thought the XBox was suppose to have a great GPU. How does their GPU stack up against today's top of the line Nvidia and ATI chips?

You're partially correct there. While the Xbox 360 can be programmed to do a certain task (run applications, as you put it), it's not meant to do so. It's designed and marketed to be a gaming console. If Microsoft wanted to put out a sub-$400 PC, they could have easily done so (with a few changes since they can't make as much money back from the huge loss).

Yes, it's basically a super-fast computer on the inside, with a mother board, CPU(s), RAM, etc., but it's not meant to provide the same usability.

Just my two pennies.

EDIT:

Beat me to it.

when a game is developed specifically for a system, the performance will be better than something made for 100+ possible graphics cards/cpu so they can't really be compared.

buuuuuut, the 360 basically has an x1800xl

Yes, it eats your 9800's lunch.

Yes, it eats most of our PC's lunch as well. Well, except for you who are eating noodles why playing on the most current crap out there.

By the time the software/games come out to take advantage of the full potential of this gaming console, PC's will have already evolved. By this time in 2006, a budget game box will out perform a 360 in gaming and you noodle eaters will be playing on cards that smoke the current 7800's and 1800's.

I bet we are still a couple years out from any real game that will take advantage of true multiple thread, multiple processor, 64 bit, etc, etc, etc technology. But when they do, holy crap will it be cool!

And finally, MS has big plan to bring this all together. Soon enough we will be doing it all on our PC Consoles!

Yeah and I gots a cookie to go with my 2 cents.
