Hey all Im thinking about finally getting a console. The last one i have had was a Xbox from 3 years ago and sold a while back. Im in college now and am really bored alot of the time. I bought that Samsung SyncMaster 220WM on BlackFriday and now am thinking about getting a XBOX 360. Is there a way to play XBOX 360 on there? People are saying to use this http://cgi.ebay.com/DVI-I-M-TO-RCA-...ageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p1638.m118

Please let me know. Thanks

The new XBOX 360 (make sure you get the newer model) has HDMI port. It can be easily connect to HDMI-DVI cable or adapter.

i *think* all the versions they have in stores now have hdmi. i bought mine when it first came out & of course no hdmi, but i was killin time at BB the other day & saw an arcade & the elite, noticed both said had hdmi.

Why the hell would you want to do that?

It's not worth it, an HDMI -> DVI 6ft cable is like $5 at monoprice

I didnt know that they had that. Like I said I am no Xbox 360 expert what so ever. Thanks though I will definitely get that then.

Ok, so here's the problem with using HDMI to DVI cabling on a 360:

No sound.

While all new 360s have HDMI (look for the little HDMI logo on the box), only the Elite comes with the A/V dongle that will provide L/R RCA and optical audio out w/HDCP support. Supposedly, if you break off the Component A/V cable's casing, it'll then fit and provide audio out and HDCP support, but I didn't feel like breaking apart my cable casing to find out. There's at least one person on that page who says HDCP was disabled using the remove casing method, and now others that say it doesn't work.

I did try a low-profile s-video A/V port cable which fit alongside an HDMI cable. That provided audio out, but no HDCP support. With HDCP disabled, DVDs won't play (nor will HD DVDs, if you have the HD DVD drive).

If you want an all-in-one solution, get the Microsoft 360 VGA cable. It comes with a small RCA to Mini-plug adapter. If you want to use HDMI via an HDMI to DVI cable (works, by the way), you'll either have to buy a low profile A/V port cable or break off the included Component A/V cable's casing and buy an RCA to mini-plug adapter (assuming you want to use the 220WM's integrated speakers).

The XBOX 360 Elite comes with the HDMI cable + a thin Audio dongle that provides RCA L/R audio and optical audio out. If you don't have Elite, then you have to buy the official Microsoft XBOX 360 HDMI cable bundle which includes HDMI cable + that Audio dongle (US$50 /Canadian $60). I got that HDMI cable bundle (open box 1/2 price at Futureshop) for my Halo 3 edition XBOX 360. Currently there is no other 3rd party making that thin Audio dongle. Only that official Audio dongle will fit properly and hassle free. So if your monitor/HDTV has HDMI/DVI input then the best deal is to buy the Elite.

Not at all - he specified the HDMI to DVI cable had no audio out. The conversion carries digital video, but no audio signal.

That has to be the stupidest thing I ever heard. How do they expect people to have sound? So the VGA cable is the best bet

DVI was only designed for video, it was never intended for multimedia purposes.

Either you don't get out much, or... Anyways its useful if you only have a video input on your monitor (like DVI). Also you do not need to spend an additional $50 from Microsoft for an additional adapter, if you did not purchase the elite version of the x360.

My 2 cents.
I have an hdmi 360 and a dell 2007wfp with dvi. I bought an hdmi to dvi adaptor and connected the 360 to the monitor. Then for sound I simply went to gamestop bought a mad catz 360 component video cable with L and R audio and optical and plugged it into the av port on the 360. The audio goes to my receiver. The Mad Catz cord costed about $15 and didnt require any modification for it to fit. This made much more sense to me than paying double the money for a microsoft brand cable that I had to cut apart to fit. This setup works great for me.

I hate stupid remark, but anyway... that adapter you listed will only for video card that goes from DVI-I port to component video. I don't think it could go reverse. Besides most likely your monitor's DVI port is only digital DVI-D.

DVI predated HDMI and DVI is mainly for computer usage, so its specification doesn't including the audio signal. That is why, they created another plug call HDMI, which can carry the audio signal.

Since the VGA cable for XBOX 360 is not cheap either, I don't recommend to use VGA. Some monitor doesn't take XBOX 360 VGA signal well.

Assuming you have the XBOX 360 Pro that comes with component A/V cable, you might want to try component -> VGA adapter.

So I presume that Mad Catz component cable has a small head that won't block the HDMI cable output, or HDMI cable has to plug at a slight angle?

It fits perfectly. The problem with the Microsoft version is the connector is very bulky and sticks up completely blocking the hdmi. The Mad Catz is very flat and allows the hdmi cord to fit right in properly. It is a very clean solution.

I told you that I havent been in the console world in like 4 years
