XBOX 360 Takes a dump

Doesnt the falcon chipset fix the failure rate to something closer to what the PS3 is? I dunno I have always been under the assumption that most of the time the only people to post are ppl with RRoD's and drive problems and everyone else is happily playing.

i guarantee you this. if u had 10 people u knew who had the 360 i bet at least 2 of them would of had there 360's broken at least once

So, basically your disc drive died. Could happen on any console, regardless of who makes it.
The moral of this story? Buy a warranty plan. I got a 3 year replacement plan when I bought my 360 just before Gears of War's release. I've gone through 3 360s, but I just take the dead one over to GameStop and they have to fulfill the warranty. I even upgraded to the Halo 3 Xbox, which so far is the best one as it has the heating issues partially fixed with larger heatsinks and the newer disc drive that is supposedly more durable.

These stories just helped me cross off 360 as one of my possible next gen consoles. I'll probably end up purchasing a Wii.

Ironically as a new buyer you'd have likely never experienced any of the problems described here.

So like a few threads out there sway your opinion? What if everyone who had a working 360 took the time to post theirs worked on their own thread?

I've had a freaking launch system thats still going, never had one issue. Should I make a thread about it? In fact should anyone make a thread about theirs dying? Hardware fails, moving parts fail... Dead 360 threads are so 2006.

The journey to becoming a ps3 fan

Hi, I will put my thoughts in this wonderful thread. On May 06 I bought an Xbox 360 with ghost recon 1 after a couple of days playing it, it began to freeze randomly.

A couple of months past and I bough the saints row game. After playing that for a while. Fast forward to around feb/march of 07 and the game just didn’t work anymore. As soon as i load the actual game, it froze after a minute of gameplay ALL the time.

Note that all the above are warning signs of things to come: read below.
After buying forza 2, as soon as i put it in my 360 BAM 3 rrod for the first time(note when i say first time). I sent it back to MS and it took then 5 yes 5 weeks to send it back to me. So now i have a refurb and after i applied the spring update BAM 3 rrod AGAIN! Now fast forward another 5-6 weeks i receive yet another refurb(around July the time now) and as soon, and i repeat as soon as i switch it on BAM again 3 rrod.

I send it back again, got a free game and a free controller for compensation and waited another 5-6 weeks. I got it back in time for a big party I was hosting in September. Guess what? It worked wonders. Would I say that two weeks later after receiving it? Nope 3 rrod again LOL. Another 4-5 weeks past and its now October and whoa they send me actually fixed the refurb they sent me in September so let’s fast forward to 2 weeks ago when gta just came out. Guess what lads. Another 3 rrod LOL.

Have you counted how many times it’s messed up? I lost count at this stage but I think it’s between 4 and 5 times.
That is why as soon as I went out shopping I bought a brand new ps3 with gta4 and I am now a happy camper. I really wasn’t planning too but I got one anyway and after 2 weeks of playing it, I ask myself this question “why didn’t I get this instead of a 360?”

Besides Xbox live, the ps3 imo is better than the 360. It is more reliable, ALOT quieter , free online play blue ray, upgradable hdd that doesn’t void warranty, folding at home and teh ability to install Linux in it plus lots of exclusive games coming out this year shuch has MGS4, little big planet, socom, etc

No1 in their right mind would blame me for ditching the 360 and this story I just told you could happen to you. You got maybe a 30% chance of this happening to you and that’s a big figure. Half of my friends have had their 360’s die at least once and if you check my gamertag on LIVE I have over 40 mates there.

You got maybe a 30% chance of this happening to you and that’s a big figure.
Assuming the 30% is right, you have a 30% chance of it happening to you the first time... having it happen twice reduces the percentage again... then further for three times etc.

In your circumstance I think it goes something like this:

1: 30.0%
2: 9.0%
3: 2.7%
4: 0.8%
... onward

Nitpicking, but you know what I mean. :D

Dude, I understand your point. But 30%+ is absolutely unacceptable. You have to either REALLY, REALLY like playing against 13-year-olds over the internet or just be a straight up masochist to hear all these stories about failed 360's and run out and buy one.

Of course it is... I don't see how there can be any debate about that. Which is why I waited until they'd sorted the hardware before buying one. I've been tracking dead 360s for statistical purposes for the last 16 months. I know exactly how bad the issue was.

(Yes, stats geek, guilty)

Well Psychotext I've got a question maybe you can answer since you've been keeping up with them, which based off reading some of your posts you seem knowledgable about this.

My last 360 I purchased was a Arcade version around November 07 I think, and I just slapped my harddrive in it and it's still working as of today. And this one is my 5th after 4 RRoD's so is my Arcade one part of the "will last longer versions"?

And I've always had them positioned for good airflow and try to keep them dust free.

Take a look at the back of the console. It will either say 175w or 203w. 175w are the newer models. Nothing is immune to failure though. 5% (or whatever is normal) still means that 5 consoles in 100 will die.

At some point it just comes down to luck.

LOL how does it reduce the percentage of it not breaking again? they stil manifacture consoles that break easily. the problem hasnt been fixed yet. you dont hear much about it now because its getting boring and its a360 Trend now. everyone use to the fact that 360's generaly have the 3rrod at some point.

That's how probability works. Each individual one may have a 30% (or whatever) chance of breaking, but the probability of you having 4 break would be 0.8%.

It gets more complicated when you take probability over time into account but for the sake of a quick calculation we're assuming here that 30% is over the life of the product. You could also argue that refurbs are more likely to break which would change the percentages.

Like I said though, it's just a quick calculation.

heh.. been researching alot about this lately and actually just sent mine in within 2 weeks of buying it.

even if you buy a 175 watt model (falcon based motherboard)

you almost have the same chance of it failing as if you bought a version 2 (zephyr) xbox 360.

the falcon still uses the same GPU with the same heatsink. The CPU has been shrunk down to 65 nm which produces less heat, however atleast 80% of all RRoD errors arise from the GPU side of the motherboard.

Also, the new falcon chipsets have a temperature probe on the CPU, that regulates fan speed. So... a 65 nm cpu which produces less heat...The same shitty GPU with the same shit heatsink, with fans going SLOWER then a previous version xbox......

hmm?

what does MS have up their ass?

Your information is incorrect. The reason the 360s RRoD is far more complicated than just the GPU failing. It's not even heat that kills them... it's heat cycles which cause cracks in the solder. See here for a little extra info: http://www.bunniestudios.com/blog/?p=223. This is why you can bring some 360s back to life by using the towel trick or a heat gun.

If you want some stats from a fairly large community:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=11130372&postcount=8061

6 falcon failures in 7 months of availability, 4 from drive issues all present at purchase. For comparison there's been 16 reports of dead 40gb PS3s there (9 drive issues, 7 other failures) in 6 months of availability.

[Edit - I'm in no way saying that the falcon model has completely sorted everything out... it's still to early to tell for sure. At this stage though, based on all the information I've seen on NeoGAF and other sites it's pretty clear it's in line with the 40gb PS3 at least for now.]

It doesn't actually reduce the chances of a second or third console breaking. Once your first one breaks and you send it back, the second one has the same chance of breaking that the first one did (assuming refurbs break at the same rate as others). But Psychotext is pointing out the fact that if you look at the odds of console breaking multiple times BEFORE it has broken once, your chances decrease greatly.

Ex. The chances of your brand new 360 breaking once is 30% (if that stat is actually correct). The chances of you brand new 360 breaking twice is 9% (30% x 30%). And so on...

My 360 just died Monday. First the display would bloom while playing COD4 till it looked like a negative. Put in Halo3 same thing. TV is Hi Def 50inch Sony and has no other issues. Changed all cables (HDMI-Y PB) then I got no sound or picture. Also sounds like drive is not spinning. But no RRD. Called MS and they are going to fix it. It is an elite and it is about 9 months old. Don't play it everyday or anything, anywhere from 1-3 hrs when I have time. Comes w/3yr warranty now so I guess I am not too upset. Hopefully they will just replace it instead of fix it but I will post when I get it back and what they did to it. My wife did offer to get me a PS3, but I think I will just wait cold turkey for my 360 to return.

My original Xbox 360, which I bought in Jan. 2006, failed in May 2006. I sent it in and received a DOA in June 2006. That console lasted until Feburary without a single problem. I sold it to buy a Falcon arcade and it's been working great as well.

I was just really unlucky getting the DOA system but it has been a solid system. I regularly, while accidentally, leave it on overnight a couple times per month. Usually I'll be playing and my wife makes me go to do something else and I forget about it. It has never caused a problem. I did this with both the Falcon and the 3rd system I had.

I just buy them used, take the stupid shell off, cool it with some real 120mm fans (INTAKE AND OUT MS!!) and completely sound proof the stupid ass LOUD dvd drive. A little effort for better performance and my 360 never even hiccups.

Looks like a middle school mad science project but wtf? It works!

Most of the 360 issues are noise and heat related. If they put 80mm fans on it and a decent, quiet dvd drive, there would be far fewer POS 360s.

I have no idea who designed the case but clearly they need a refresher in real life engineering. The only way that the temps stay within reason is if the room you play in also has large hunks of meat hanging in it.

I got my 360 elite back today. And actually it was a new one (not the actual one I sent in). Included in the new 360 was a 1 month Xbox Live card and new warranty. Not bad, less the 3 week turnaround time. Hopefully this one will last longer then the original.
Props to MS, they have made up for my not being able to play COD4 for awhile.
:D:D:D

Ive had a 360 since christmas of 06, on my second unit right now. First one rrod after just over year, this one is better (the first one also suffered from quite a few disc read errors), the only complaint i have now is that its a lot louder than my first unit, the fans are terrible this go round. Then again its been rock solid so far, ive played like 20 plus hours on GTA4 and never had a single issue with the game so far.

That's how probability works. Each individual one may have a 30% (or whatever) chance of breaking, but the probability of you having 4 break would be 0.8%.
.

No, actually, that's not how probability works.

If you were to buy four 360's right now, you would have a .8% chance that all four would fail.

If you had three 360s fail before OR you had your single unit break three times already and you just got your machine back from MS again (making it the fourth), the chance that refurbed fourth will break sometime in the future is still 30%.

I.e. if you flip a coin, your previous flips don't magically change the chance of your next flip.

Also, things to note because there's a lot of misleading or uncertain info floating around on this thread about refurbs and warranties.

1) Gamestop no longer provides extended warranties for the 360. MS doesn't allow it. They want all of that stuff handled through them. For the most part this is better anyway. If you live in within the 48 states, MS will generally get you a unit back to you within a pretty reasonable time. If you live in Australia or someplace... well you're fucked. I don't know for certain if places like BestBuy or Circuit City offer warranties still, but I would guess not as MS really wants to handle all of it. Gamestop will continue to honor your warranty if you already purchased your 360 with warranty during the period they offered it, however you cannot renew it.

By the way, for all Gamestop warranties, you can't just purchase it at any time. It must be at the time of the original purchase of the merchandise. It also cannot be renewed normally. However, let's say your PS3 breaks down and you had their warranty. You take it in to exchange for a new one. That old one year warranty is all used up regardless of whether it broke down one day or 364 days after your purchase. It is good only for a single replacement. When you get your new replacement unit, you do have the option of buying another warranty.*

*This does not apply to those of you who purchased the 360 warranty when they still offered them. They will not offer it again even if you use up your replacement.

2) When you send in a 360, the one you get back has no guarantees. It can be your exact same unit, but repaired in some way. It can be a brand new unit. It can be someone else's refurbed unit. Who knows!

Best case scenario:
A) You send in an old 360 (the ones with no HDMI) which has known failure rate problems.
B) You get a brand new Falcon mobo 360 with HDMI.

Worst case scenario:
A) You send in a brand new Falcon mobo 360 with HDMI that had some failure or another (whether it be RRoD or a mechanical drive failure or whatever)
B) You get someone else's old unit WITHOUT an HDMI port.

Yes, both happen. The latter is happening less and less with more of those units simply being beyond salvation and Microsoft is more careful these days with replacing units that have the exact same specs, however Microsoft does ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING THEY CAN to keep EVERY SINGLE unit of theirs in circulation as long as possible. There are units out there that have gone back to be refurbed more than once and have changed owners each time. Apparently this approach is cheaper than simply replacing those obviously shitty units. It is all a matter of luck and timing. If they happen to have repaired units and yours is taking too long to repair or is irrepairable: you're going to get someone else's repaired unit. If yours is no good and all they have are new ones: you may get a new one (like Phatjedi)!

This situation has improved as time has gone on. Those old 360s circulating are becoming less common as I said. After a lot of complaining and high profile incidents, Microsoft is a LOT better at handling special units, i.e. units that have personal mods (that don't break warranty), so that these units actually return to their rightful owner. It wasn't until MS did stuff like completely scrubbing off a 360 that had RRoD that had the main Bungie team's signatures on it and getting all kinds of hell from the community and Bungie themselves before they started keeping better track of stuff like this, however I really wouldn't trust MS to handle your special stuff. If you can, put your old default faceplate and what not back on before you ship it.

However regardless of what kind of machine you get back, I haven't heard of any problems with them not transferring data from HD to HD correctly, they'll even go to pretty good lengths to recover data from faulty HDs (which are a lot less common than one would think).

2) When you send in a 360, the one you get back has no guarantees. It can be your exact same unit, but repaired in some way. It can be a brand new unit. It can be someone else's refurbed unit. Who knows!

Not sure how it works in the states, but in the UK, when i sent mine back the first time, it was outside of warranty and before MS extended it to 3 years, so expecting to pay for the repair i phoned the fair trading office up and they said that MS either has to repair the 360 or offer a full refund, they shouldnt be returning refurbs. Like i said, could differ elsewhere

No bullsh!t guys I'm on my 5th one, and my sons first one is sitting on my desk waiting to go back.

All RROD Failures...

Pretty much everyone I know that has had a 360 for any length of time has had atleast one RROD.

I'd like to go get a PS3 but damn Gears 2...

You just have shitty luck.

I think I'm one of the lucky ones. My unit barely even gets warm, top bottom or sides. Pull a disc out of the drive after a long marathon session and it's room temperature.

lol think of mgs4, socom, GT5, resisdence 2, killzone 2, final fantasy and Home. easily outweighs Gears 2. i have both so i dont mind what games are exclusive or not but any game thats multi platform i get it on the ps3

And you guys are wrong about probability, the ones who keep saying its always 30 percent for each one you get.

Yes each individual one is 30 percent, however we are talking about a permutation, not a combination scenario. Each successive units death probability is depenedent on the previous trial, the chances of you having 4 units break is lower than if you bought just one unit.

No, actually, that's not how probability works.

If you were to buy four 360's right now, you would have a .8% chance that all four would fail.
That's exactly what I said... you just agreed with me. My original post was talking about the likelihood you'd have the same thing happen to you as happened to the poster I was replying to Not that it applied any more anyway, it's clear the failure rate on the falcons is nothing like 30%... but even if it was - the odds on you having 4 360s fail on you is lower than the odds you'd have 1 360 fail.

Oh, and if you send in a machine with a HDMI port, you're getting one back with a HDMI port. I've logged 1300+ 360 replacements over at NeoGAF and not once has what you described happened to any one of them.

Where does it say the wattage on the back of the console? Found it on the power supply, it says 203 on mine, but its the same unit ive had since i first bought one.

Nice site to find everything but the wattage, im pretty sure it is not on the back of the console...

Edit- That tells you how to find it on the box your console came in, but does nothing to help find out the wattage of a refurb
Not sure then. I doubt they sent you back a falcon model refurb though... sounds too generous for them.

Yea I have had bad luck with my 360's but you have to admit hardware wise the 360 is the biggest piece of sh!t the world has seen in a long time. What a miserable failure for MS the whole RROD has been. My cuz is on his 3rd, best friend is on his second, friends son is on his 3rd.

Dude no offense but I'd rather play Gears 2 than all of those put together. Not dissing Ps3 but they just don't have the games to make me sell this POS.

Aye. They're lucky they have such a strong games line-up really.
