Xbox 360 Software Glitch?

So far my experience with the xbox 360 has been totally awesome except for one thing. Twice my system has froze, BUT both times it has been at a specific point. The two times it froze I was in PDZ and quit to the dashboard, and after confirming a blank side window thing would just sit there with a black screen replacing the PDZ image.

This seems to be some kind of software bug if I it happened twice at the same spot. Has this happened to anyone else?

Also when I move my 360 I think I hear something small rattling around inside, I think it might be for the ring of light thing to know what direction is up but does anyone else hear it?

I can't help you with the possible software bug since I don't have PDZ but I can verfiy that my XBOX360 has a small rattle as well - kind of freaked me out when I first unpacked it but haven't had any issues - you may be right about it being for vertical / horizontal detection?

So far I haven't had any freeze ups at all playing the following games:

Madden 06
Tiger Woods
Ridge Racer 6
Project Gotham 3
Need For Speed: MW
Kameo
COD 2
King Kong

Guess I'm lucky...

yeah i've had the same freezup once or twice, but its pretty specific as to what your doing within PDZ. No rattle for me though

There were a lot of reports of this rattling on XBox-Scene after the initial launch. Anything rattling inside a system is NOT good, and could potentially be damaging. And you should definately either contact Microsoft, or at the very least visit XBox-Scene's forums and find out what the heck it is.

I have had two freezeups since launch. One, I believe to be software related, and one is a
"your guess good as mine type of deal"

The software one was related to something in NFS:MW. I was running from teh cops, the car hit a pursuitbreaker and somehow my car got wedged inside the debris after the cutscene played. All the cops converged on my location but because of the clipping error they all crashed into each other and got stuck. It was pretty spectacular and humorus until the box took a dump.

So it kind of looks like bugs in the software can cause hardlocks, or the need for restarts.

Heh, welcome to windows 360

=)

Wonderful... Where is the Control-Alt-Delete keys now..
I believe uncle bill combined all three of those keys into one pretty "key" on the front of the unit somewhere ....

...not sure tho

From another forum I've visited:
"ALL the 360's I've seen have been faulty. That's 100%. All have failed in one way or another within the first two hours of use. The build quality is atrocious (mechanically misaligned DVD drawers, poor cable terminations, loose fittings rattling around inside the case). Electrically, the power supply is unsafe - I had one that got so hot that it scorched a table."

Now what the heck are "loose fittings"? Someone should really call Microsoft and find out (and exchange if possible... something loose inside ANY complex electronic device can spell disaster. Especially after the super short 3 month warranty expires. Those of you who frequent XBox-Scene should be able to find out what exactly these "loose fittings" could be.

hmm I think I might have the fan problem as well... when I first turned it on I was really surprised as it was louder than my TV's fan and my Gamecube's fan, and almost as loud as one of my PCs. I'm not going to send it back for that though... cooler system = no freezes :)

Now I remember why I love PCs... if something is wrong I can just pop it open and take a look. With the 360 I'd have to send it back... :(

Also... I found out why it rattles! :p My hypothesis was dead on, it is the device to determine the position of the xbox. Here is the proof: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=461677

I knew it wasn't something just loose inside because it has a "springy" sound to it.

Where have you guys been? This "rattling" inside the case is a small enclosed ball to detect if the system is vertical or horizontal.....

and to whoever posted that quote from a person from another forum, that person is obviously incredibly biased and what he says is rediculous, it is completely not true. 100% hah? Riiiiiight!

Of course it's ridiculous and stupid. There's no way there's a 100% defect rate (even if it is higher than the 3% reported rate by quite a bit). But if his "loose filings" are a ball inside the system to detect placement, that explains that. How come some people in this thread say they don't have anything bouncing around in there?

Don't pay attention to steveip, he is anti MS in everything and fanatic-youngman for Sony.

Just look at his post history.

Don't worry about the "rattle". As for the software bug, that is on the PDZ creators and thus the complaints should be sent to them. I emailed them about it, but haven't received a reply...surprise.

Actually I'm no fan of either console, but I do own a PS2 (not an XBox) because I found it to have better games (just in my opinion). I didn't make that post up, I seriously did get it from another forum.

Rare is known for pretty solid programming, though, and PDZ has been in the works since the end of the N64 - I can't see why they would release software with many reported glitches.

Just get a screwdriver take the side caseing off and run it that way so it doesnt overheat... thats what I would do :)

Rare developing the game for so long doesn't mean anything. The N64 and the Xbox360.....kind of different don't you think?

The system is different, the architecture is different, but that doesn't change the fact that they've been working on the game for like 6 years lol. A team of 5 talented people can get a big game done in that long. Hell, 100 hour J-RPGs and 50 hour Zelda games don't even take that long to make. So it's disappointing to hear that PDZ is a 10 hour game with software glitches, that's all. I would expect more from Rare.

I wouldn't expect much from Rare. They haven't made a phenomenal game since Goldeneye.

I'm guessing they must spent at least five of those six years making the title screen.

I'm hoping they release a PDZ point 5, one that dis-includes all the 'suck'

Never before have I been so terribly excited and utterly let down. To this day it is the only game I have returned to a retail store, begging them to take it back because it was so bad. "Please don't make me keep this as my only xbox 360 launch title Mr Store Manager, I can only afford one, and this one blows!"

Obviously they didn't take enough time developing the game to detach all the N64 tentacles still clinging to it.

It's the most beautiful old school next generation title ever... It's console roots are so dated the only way anybody could outdo it is to make a first person version of mario brothers, the one where you kick turtles and crabs, and run from methane gas fairies.

I'd have been happy if the game came out next christmas, after they had time to code in the jump button.

Cool idea, awful implementation.

I have had PGR crash a few times. It seems to get stuck in the guide and then the system has to be reset.

Goldeneye and Perfect Dark (original) never had a jump button, but both were immensely entertaining. Of course Rare's made good games since Goldeneye (Perfect Dark was almost as good, and Conker was a phenomenal achievment on the N64)... and I know they've lost some of their Goldeneye/Perfect Dark talent to Free Radical studios... but it still saddens me to see one of my favourite and most humorous development houses not as great as they used to be. Hell, even during the NES days Tradewest/Rare never failed to entertain me, and the brought the 16-bit SNES right through the 32bit days. *sniff*

Trust me, nobody is more disappointed to see the Rare of old replaced with the Rare of new. I loved Conker, paid almost 70 dollars for it after Tax. Pushed through it, even though it did have shit controls, and seemed to ask too much of the system. I enjoyed the hell out of Goldeneye, and Perfect Dark.

They might not have had jump buttons then, but the world was a simpler place then and has come a long way in the time since those days of old. If this game didn't feel like it needed a jump button, I could understand. There are boxes to climb on, rails to jump over while maneuvering during firefights...things of that nature that have come to be included in all FPS's since then. We're always bitching about devs not taking big enough leaps forward, so what do we do when they take one big ass leap back to 1997?

Have you played the game yet SP? It feels like you are glued to the ground, and that your avatar is just skating along on ice skates. I could literally bitch till they release a sequel.

My main disappointment was that with all the coolness oozing from the game, there were just too many issues for me to enjoy it. And I tried. I played and played it, and tried it online, and hated every second of it. It just never got fun...for me. If you like the game, then great, I'm glad it has found an audience. I am not that audience. I picked up NFS:MW and I'm still playing it, and liking it a lot.

I may pick it up a long time from now, when 20 dollars shines from it's price tag, and give it another shot.

Maybe.

I've played it, but not at length. It seemed "meh" to me, and I do agree that being stuck to the ground is a bit of a degeneration, but it didn't bother me as much as it did you. I didn't get enough playtime to truly gauge it, but my friend said it finishes in approx 10 hours, which is disappointing for something they've been working on in a while. Yeah the controls/camera on Conker were a bit iffy, but the game itself was amazing, and the achievments they made on the cartridge should be a school of game-making topic somewhere. I didn't play the re-do on the XBox though, but I do remember a review mentioning they made it look nice, but dumbed the main game down :\

As I've said, I'm quite disappointed with one of my favourite companies.

One would also wonder how hard these people are shaking their xboxes?

That's what I was starting to wonder, because i'm not getting any rattling noise. As a general rule, no matter how tempting, I always try to restrain myself from shaking electronic devices.

So far, absolutely no lock or crashes and I currently have played

Quake 4
COD2
Condemned
NFS:MW
Amped 3
Tony Hawk
PGR3
King Kong
Kameo
PD0

I actually enjoy PDZ, I loved the original and this one, although not as good, is still awesome. The only problem I've had is the freezing when quitting to the dashboard, and I think it only happens when you do it at the title screen but I'd have to do more testing first.

As for the "springy" noise inside the xbox 360, you dont have to shake it at all to hear it. I have particularly good hearing so from just moving it from horizontal to vertical with my ear next to it I can hear it.

How loud are your 360s? Mine sounds like it has an 80mm fan running in it @ 7v or so, which is pretty loud for a console.

Because my PC is in the same room, and I'm gaming with surround sound, I only notice the 360 when it spins the disc. Sounds like the thing is going to to head to mars using my TV stand as a launch pad. PGR3 being the worst culprit

After all the PC's I've owned, and the fact that I learned to sleep in the same room as a delta black label for a period of time, I think I'm immune to fan noise.

Either that or I've destroyed the part of your hearing that catches that sound wave
