I recently bought a 360 elite and have read a couple of rumors about there being a Blue-Ray version in the works. I've been thinking about returning it and waiting for the revision even though nothing official has been announced. Has anyone heard anything or read something?
 
I saw that someone had found a Microsoft affiliate submitted a patent request for what appeared to be a Blu-Ray external optical drive for the XBOX360, but as gigabyte1024 has said, all rumors have been squashed. Microsoft has outright denied any intention to release a BD player for XBOX360, which is a shame. I have a PS3, but I prefer the 360 for many reasons (mostly, the library). a BD drive would a great accompanyment to the HD-DVD drive already attached. I think MS got sore when HD-DVD tanked, and they likely lost a lot of $ in the process, not just on the drives that went for $25/ea in the end, but also in the development of the HD-DVD standard. Also, it's likely that the BD camp wants a hefty licensing fee for the BD stuff, if for no other reason than to thumb their nose in the losers face. It's likely a lot to do with corporate politics, and very very little to do with $ or technological reasons.
 
Well, you would think they would eventually add one, but Bluray needs to actually hit first before MS would add one. The insane prices certainly wouldn't make it an attractive option right now, to MS or consumers.

If they make it as add-on it probably would be cheaper to get PS3 anyway. Just look at prices for stand alone blu-ray players.
 
I know it's probably not going to happen, but a 360 with an internal Blu drive with full support for the HD DVD addon would be one hell of a piece of equipment. A dual format player with media streaming capabilities AND the ability to play games would be huge. Microsoft and Sony have both been trying to make their gaming consoles the centerpeice of peoples AV racks, and this would certainly help. I know it's not going to happen. And there are certainly other things that would prevent it from being a huge seller (RRoD, Audio capabilities, fan noise, etc...), but it's fun to think about.
 
The main reason MS backed hd-dvd was to create a format war. MS wants us downloading all of our content and not buying actual discs.

Bluray kinda stinks right now, 30 bucks for a movie is too expensive. When the movie prices get in line with current dvd prices then it might be worth it to me.

The Blu-ray DVDs are definitely too expensive in stores. Unless they have special promotions slashing the prices in half at B&M, I never buy Blu-ray when it is selling for $25, $30, or even $35 and up. Whenever I see an entire section of movies at this price, I wonder who actually pays for this. No wonder the mass public has been slow to embrace this new technology. I am all for high definition, but if prices remain the way they are at stores, potential customers will quickly look to alternative means of high definition (digital downloads of course) within a few years.

I have both the hd-dvd add on drive for the 360 as well as a ps3. The only movies I've paid more than $20 for are the planet earth hd-dvd set and the Heroes Season 1 set (both $30). As long as you can wait around for deals, you can always get movies at regular DVD prices. But I'd like the prices to come down enough so that when a movie FIRST comes out, I can go to a B&M and pick up the most recently released movie for $15 or $20.
