Hey, what would you buy if you were me?

I have a computer with; Athlon XP 3200+, A7N8X DLX, 768MB DDR 400MHZ, 9800 Pro 128mb, WD Raptor 74GB, 19" Trinitron monitor, Z-5500 speakers, Logitech mx-510 mouse.

I have an xbox as well.

I am thinking about either spending my money on a x850 XT for Quake 4, Unreal 2007, Ghost Recon 3 & Call of Duty 2 OR an Xbox 360 to play these games.

X850 XT www.futureshop.ca $499.99CDN sale ends tomorrow.
Xbox 360, let's say it's the same price.

since all of those are first person shooters, and first person shooters suck ass on consoles, i would say the X800.

although i would go for a 7800GTX, it will support unreal3 and the other games FAR better than the X800 will... not to mention its a hell of a lot faster.

Get the X850 XT cuz you can look at pr0n on it too (dual purpose)

Hi Lithium726,

My computer has an agp bus and the power supply is a SilenX 400w with an 18.0 Amp 12V Rail, much too weak for the 6800U/7800GTX Nvidia line.

I disagree that computers are better than consoles for FPS games. Think about it, the mouse on a computer is far too superior of a killing device.

Ps. the 7800GTX is only PCIE.

i ran my GT on an 18A PSU for a while. was running an a7n8x system as well. it was fine. but really, that thing is not enough for an X800 series card either. you're really cuttin it close.

although, your motherboard draws power for the CPU off the 5V rail, so that video card is gonna have those 18A pretty much to itself. a 6800U draws about 10A on full load. i didnt think about the GTX and PCIe thing, but id take a 6800U over it as well, but thats just me. better feature set and purevideo, which i really like.

I'd say invest in a a computer upgrade. Your processor and the amount of memory you have would limit any new high end video card upgrade, especially that memory amount, pretty badly. Also, you realize that you've been limiting your CPU for a long time now by not running it in dual channel memory mode.

I don't know what those games are gonna need in terms of horsepower when they come out, so buying a card now for games so far out(end of 2k6 for ut2k7 I heard a while back) seems a bit premature. Unless you have games right now that you really desire more performance for, I'd wait as by the time those games come out the x850 should be quite a bit cheaper I would think. Your other hardware might be quite weak then in terms too for those games, especially that processor.

Also don't buy a console when it first comes out(within the first year I'd say as there generally aren't a lot of quality games for a while), there is generally price gouging and this stupid package concept (games + console) seems like it gaining lots of momentum since it forces game sales of launch games that generally aren't all that. Waiting will also give you time to see some of how the next gen console wars are going to shake out.

Hi Skrying,

My motherboard says I am running in Dual channel mode. I have three 256mb chips.

get a better job and get it all?
Plus i can get 850xtpe's for 330 retail.. why spend 400 on a regular xt?
crazy kunuk

You are in computer forums.... not console gamer forums... Go for the vc!!

how, and where?

If that were true, all your CC's would be maxed out, as they'd flip for more easily. Unless of course you've got a "friend" that helps them off the back of a truck. Or you're a reseller with volume pricing, or you're just trying to sound cool.

Hi babochee,

I think I will do just that!

I spotted the ATI® Radeon X850 XT PE, new, up for bids in my local area but not at the low price you quoted. I will bid at the same price as the ATI® Radeon X850 XT with tax at futureshop.ca!

Hi Geshtar,

My logic flows like this, I really fear now that Nvidia has made it public that the 6800 ultra is their last agp video card, that ATI may follow suit, so I am trying to get in on what I fear may be the last and most powerful agp card available.

The Xbox 360 has alot of good games gearing up for it (Morrowind Oblivion! OMFG AWSOME!). But I normaly buy the console a couple months after launch and get the card first. But I love to have em both.

since all of those are first person shooters, and first person shooters suck ass on consoles, i would say the X800
In my opinion while the mouse is better I dont think that is enough reason to not play on consoles what so ever.

Ok, sales & fear of no more agp cards seems like bad logic:eek:

I think I will just wait for the R520 core which better be agp:) to roll around as I am currently not interested in any pc titles available.

Goodnite.

im a computer person and my xbox + live + halo 2 couldnt keep me away from cs for more than a week.. so the video card.. BUUUT xbox360 will give u better graphics without having to fuxors around with tweaking stuff. i would wait to see if the r520 has a agp vers though.

Thanks for all the posts guys I really enjoyed reading all of your awesome input!

I have decided to hold back on upgrading my pc any further for the time being as my processor would certainly hold a x850 xt pe back from it's full potential. I know this for a fact as my current 9800 pro scores 18K 2001 3d marks where I see another guy getting 35K+ with the same card but with a new A64 chip.

Yeah.. xbox 360 ..maybe or ..maybe a ps3. As far as a future computer upgrade goes I will have to wait and see what the most powerful video card is to fill my agp slot when unreal 2k7 comes out but until then I know my current rig performs absolutely perfectly. I know as I have played doom 3/hl2 ut2k4, stalker alpha, battlefield 2 all with extremely respectable settings:).

Oh yeah! how can I forget far cry, I was able to massively crank the settings up.

If anyone still plays far cry I must recommend this amazing jeep trek you must take through dangerous cliffs to the peak of mountains; sorry I can't remember what it was called but it's all over the internet! took me hours to pass the damn hard trail.

Goodnite.

Understand that the xbox 360 is many times more powerful than the best computer system you could build for 10k and will sell for under 400.00 dollars. The ps3 will sell for much more and after reading about the 2 systems the xbox 360 in my educated opinion is a far superior machine. Personally, I will be buying a xbox360 and have it as my primary game machine vs my computer which for another 2 years will be used mainly for internet only. You must understand microsoft is selling a badboy machine for under 400.00 dollars simply because they are going to gain the profits in software sales. Combine the xbox 360 with a keyboard and mouse hooked up to a hi def tv or monitor and you have a 400.00 system that blows any home computers doors off and yes that includes even a sli 7800gtx setup.

Its been said before, and I'll say it once again. The CPU's in our computers right now are better than the ones going in Next Gen consoles. The RSX in the PSU is an tweaked and OC'd 7800GTX, and the Xenos is really the only innovative thing in consoles right now. Next Gen consoles are actually not that powerful, and people are really being tricked by Sony's bullshit video's that they showed. It was pre rendered people..... jesus.

Your seriously in a dream world if you believe that. Why does everyone believe the console hype everytime a new system comes out. They never ever live up to the expectations. Some will never learn...

Personally, I'd wait for the X-Box 360. There is so much that can be done with that console (considering it's a friggin' computer) and it's more of an entertainment center than the average user's computer would be. The Radeon 9800 Pro can still handle every game on the market right now. How do I know this? Because my Radeon 9700 Pro can handle every game currently for sale.

That's just my opinion, however. Make up your own mind! ;)

The upcoming conoles power and performance is being overhyped. Yes they will be very powerful but Sony and MS are making them look bigger than what they really are. There was an article at Anandtech a while ago and what some devs said about it:

"...the real-world performance of the Xenon CPU is about twice that of the 733MHz processor in the first Xbox...floating point multiplies are apparently 1/3 as fast on Xenon as on a Pentium 4."

"The Cell processor doesn’t get off the hook just because it only uses a single one of these horribly slow cores; the SPE array ends up being fairly useless in the majority of situations, making it little more than a waste of die space. "

"The most ironic bit of it all is that according to developers, if either manufacturer had decided to use an Athlon 64 or a Pentium D in their next-gen console, they would be significantly ahead of the competition in terms of CPU performance."

"Although both manufacturers royally screwed up their CPUs, all developers have agreed that they are quite pleased with the GPU power of the next-generation consoles."

why upgrade to only a X850 XT? These new games comming out demand so much more then the games that came out only a coupe months ago. If you are only going to upgrade to a X850 XT i would say take the xbox360. At least will have a better experience graphicswise on that thing. Plus all those games are comming out for xbox360 as well. The only minus about the 360 is that you would have to play with a controller instead of a keyboard and mouse

Hi osirus35,

controller instead of a keyboard and mouse

I must like the joystick better than the mouse as it doesn't provide the guaranteed extreme ease of aim that the mouse does promising to kill my enemy without a challenge, every time. Heck I know for a fact after involving myself in a decade of first person shooter competitions on the computer that the mouse is completly illogical, click and point monkey behavior.

Up until a month ago before my self enlightenment I did enjoy seeing my enemies fall constantly, many, many times before I died myself in all of computer's first person shooter games known to man that have come out in the past decade.

Well I can only hope anyone playing fps games on the pc will buy an xbox type controller to stop their monkey behavior asap but reality is the computer is doomed for online first person shooter gaming for you may choose to use a Dual Analog joystick for a good challenge but at the same time your enemy may very well be using a mouse to rack his score easily through the roof time and time again. Xbox on the other hand strictly has the dual analog controller so everyone is on a equal !!challenging!! playground!. Though feel free on the computer to host lan parties which are much more personal gaming experiences*the way I like it!* with dual analog controllers! :)

i would say wait a month or two more. it cant hurt either way. you may want to see how much support the new xbox and playstation have for high def tv's and how well the games will support them. thats what im waiting for. its either a new xbox and hd tv or a new computer and hd tv.

You should wait and see what the xbox360 is like when it comes out then make your choice.

Buy a X800XL and call it a day. :p Besides you'll bottleneck it, hell if you got a X800NP you'd even bottle neck it.

if u know anyone working in ATI, ask him to buy it for you. I paid $350 for a card retail @$600 through my friend's uncle...
