Im using the new 87.25 driver nothing overclocked.

I used to have an x800xt then went to a 7800gtx then to a x1900xt which is currently for sale on ebay. Now as i cant keep the pace AND FED UP with high end gaming wanting a PS3 i decided to go for a 7600gt by sparkle which cost me £150 including the zalman cooler (cooler is here tomorrow), i wasnt expecting to play games anymore but wanted a card for vistas 3d interface.

I thought id have a laugh and try some gaming to see how bad it was. So i fired up Half life 2 and thought id be safe at 1280x720 with 2xaa and 8xaf........it ran like butter!! So i upped and upped and ended up at 1920x1200 max settings with 4xaa and 8xf........butter!!

......then i tried Sin Emergence....which equaled HL2 in performance so thats another at 1920x1200 max settings with 4xaa and 8xaf, yes i know its the same engine!

next up was serious sam 2 which was silky smooth at 1600x1024 with no aa and 8xaf max settings!

Next was Oblivion 1600x900 8xaf and pretty high settings, hdr far tree distance and far grass distance, no self shadows or gass shadows etc, ran quite smoothly, (i was very happy seeing as i was used to an x1900xt!)

Next was COD2: Max settings 2xaa and 8xaf at 1600x900,...ran beautifully

Next was Tomb raider Legends: now with max settings, no aa 8xaf and next gen on this game ran quite stuttery on the massive waterfall section where you do your first swan dive, a bit dissapointed but i guess ill have to tweak a bit more!

Quake 4: Butter at 1600x1200 with 2 x aa and 8xaf high detail.

Riddick: Butter at max settings all settings on 1920x1200 with 4 xaa and 8xaf, ran like butter!!

I AM TOTALLY GOBSMACKED BY THIS CARD, im glad im saving pennies by quitting the high end race!!

I have posted on other websites and people seem to prefer the x850xtpe but with old tech etc on the x850xtpe and size in my eyes full directx9 support at good framerates is best, im not up to speed on x850xtpe performance, what do you guys think is better?
ill do a couple of hl2 benches in a tick and post them

I've always been a fan of midrange cards.

No *idea* why people drop $600 on a high-end card of a given generation. All a high-end card in a generation means is that you can play games of that gen at the highest settings. You *still* have to buy a card for the next gen games, either way.

A $600 card that plays today's games at high quality is going to be playing "tomorrow's" games at low to medium quality. So, why not just buy the $150 midrange card today, $150 midrange card tomorrow, $150 midrange card after that....and keep playing every single game that comes out at medium to high quality?

"Saving pennies" to buy a high-end video card just doesn't make sense anymore. Instead, buy the card at the price-to-performance point you can afford to buy again in 6 months.

I prefer the X850XT and thats why I chose it over the 7600GT. The x850 is no slouch and there is a big difference between x800 and x850. The 7600GT will excel in SM3.0 games but if your like me and like to run high res with high eye candy the x850xt is stronger.... just not sm3.0

I remember paying 375 for an AIW ATI 9800 Pro. Never again. Paid 180 for my HIS x850 and love it. All in all their both wonderful cards for the price.

pretty nice :) yeh id say the x850xt pe is slightly faster but the 7600gt is still a great card, as you have shown :)

I hear where your coming from. I recently had to replace my motherboard in my HTPC, so I got an nForce4 and with it an XFX Geforce 7600 GS-Extreme Edition (500core/900memory) and I fired up a bunch of games (CoD2 and Quake 4) Ran like butter at 1280x1024. Just like my Evga 7900 GT CO. Very VERY Impressed with it, and thats with the HUGE passive heatsink.

I was also suprised after selling my X1900XT and down-grading my machine to a 6200 TC and 1GB, that I am still able to play BF2 at 1024x768 Medium, HL2 1280x1024 High, and Far Cry 1024x768 Medium.

I thought for sure my PC gaming days were over until I upgraded again.

Not bad for ~$60.

More "butter" than a dairy farm...:p
Forking out for big end cards kinda lost it's appeal for me....at least, up until I got a discount on an X1900

Are you really serious?

If so, then DOOD!

Why wouldn't I be?

My PC is really silent now, too. No GPU fan, no chipset fan (used to have an Ultra-D).

Squeeee!

If "silent" is your game, definitely consider a 7600GS, too. AWESOME performance for the price, and, again, no fan = no noise.

..and the Asus version supports HDCP and dual-link DVI.
