Hey Guys,

Got a friend who just bought the dell 30" monitor and his x850xt pe can't run the 2560x1600, he was considering the x1600pro but wanted to know how this card compares with his current one, from looking at the specs its a little unclear as to if one card is a better performer than the other.

do you guys think its a smart move? He mainly plays WoW and is curious if the card will chunk along at 2560x1600 or handle that game normally

Dude, for that resolution to get good fps you need at LEAST a 7950GX2 or X1950XTX. If he wants smooth performance he needs 7900GTX's SLied or Some X1900/1950 Crossfire setup.

Please avoid X1600 cards from ATI. They are useless, if you want to play games.
Considering that WoW is not as "heavy" as other games are, for graphics cards, I would say a single X1900 XT/XTX or X1950 XTX should do fine at that res. If you go with the X1900 XT, try to go with the 512 MB of Video RAM model.
You can also look at NVIDIA cards. A 7900 GTO/GTX or 7950 GX2 will also suit your friend's needs.

x1900 or higher for that res for ati

7900gto or higher for nviida

if you can get a 7900gto, get it, that's your best bet (unless you don't mind really really loud coolers like on the x1900xt 256, althought the 512 might eek out the 256 in the vram at that high res

but as for the thread title, the x850xtpe is better. no sm3.0 sure, but it's faster

Not everyone wants to put down $200 or $300 for a video card well at least when dx10 cards are around the corner...

850xtpe should hammer the 1600pro...

The x1600pro is barley as good as a 9800pro. the X850XT PE will demolish it. Seriously you won't get anything decent out of that resolution with out a high end duel video card set up. If he has to be cheap, just tell him to run at 1280x800.

I would...especially when most people are going to wait for the 2nd or 3rd gen cards...Why sell your kidney to get the 1st gen DX10 when theres hardly any need for it? If your friend is going to be running 2560X1600 he needs more than the X850xtpe..which is an awesome card (Im using it now) but it cant handle that resolution and be smooth.

All new technology come out at price... Even 2nd generation dx10 cards... These dx 9 cards are going to drop further once the new set of cards are here.... It's just not a good time to buy a high end dx 9 card right now...

Your friend is gonna have to pay some big bucks for a high end videocard to run his games at 2560x1600. Ati x1900 series or Nvidia 7900 series

The amount of money your going to need to spend on a videocard is directly proportional to the resolution of the monitor. for example

1024*768 = about $100 for videocard
1280*1024 = $100-200
1600*1200 = $200-400
2560*1600 = over $400

There is pretty much no way to get around that unless you run the game at super low settings
