X850XT PE Temps.....in UK.

Ok so since installing the 5.6 cats ive been getting or noticing very high temps with my X850XT PE. The problems been noticed and discussed by other user so im not digging that up again, what i would like to know is what temps other PE owners are getting whether mine are a little high.

I live in the UK and we're experiencing a bit of a heat wave at the mo (meaning we can actually see the sun every so often and it isnt pissing it down 24/7) which might be affecting ambient temps, but at the moment im getting an Idle temp of around 45c and a temp of 70c under load (i.e Doom 3 no stop for a few hours). These are the temps registered in ATI Tray Tools and Everest after i tweaked the fan settings in ATT. Are these too high and will they damage the card if its used at these temps for long periods of time?

If there are any other PE owners from Great Britainland who can comment/compare that would be great.

Im using the stock cooling fan and the cards in the original 'HP' case from when i bought the comp a few months ago. I upgraded the PSU with the X850 so it isnt starved of power and ive been running the comp with the side open.

Also if anyones got any ideas for better cooling which doesnt involve a) loads of money.... b) voiding the cards warranty... c) getting a new case...yet (i realise this probably gonna be the best idea, but id rather modify the one ive got first) then it would be appreciated.

Cheers for any replies....

I dont own one but i am 99.95% sure that 70 isnt bad at all, the only way you can realy redcue them temps is to get an Arctic Cooling ATI silencer but that woul void your warranty

Cheers for the reply ClawHammer...where in the UK are you?

Looking round i suppose 70c isnt to bad....though forgot to mention the max temps i was getting during a particularly hot spell....it got to around 108c before it closed Halo down to cool off. That happened just after i installed the 5.6 cats.....it was brown trousers time i can tell ya.

Would putting some AS5 on under the stock cooler void warranty?

Solihull (near Birmingham)

Technicaly it would but only if they find out ;) tho unless its artifacting then it 'should' be ok

Im in Skipton, near Leeds.

Ive not had any artifacting yet, when it got upto the 100's the game started juddering then it just closed down with a warning message saying the card was reaching unsafe temps and has been shut down as a precaution... :(

I would RMA it becase they are designed to operate in very high ambiant temps (think Florida) and shouldt do that, BTW it is the double slot cooler isnt it and you havnt messed with the fan speed settings?

Yeah its the double slot PE version...

I had a fiddle with the fan speed settings in ATI Tray Tools but i can reset to default. The default fan settings are strange though.....

0c-89c the fans on at between 4% and 18% then only when it hits 90c and above does the fan get to 100%. Ive made sure these are the correct default manufacturer fan setting for the cards.

Its strange that it only started doing this after the 5.6 cats were installed. Before i didnt care about the temp aslong as it worked fine.

3 things....

1. Get ATi Tool and set the fan to this, or cooler if you prefer. The default fan settings will keep the card at that 70C level.

2. Did Bush really say Britianland? If so thats hilarious.

3. Happy Independance Day! (muwhahahahahhaha) :D

If you're breaking 100C you've probably got the same problem I had... my fan died. Check it out :)

I had such problems with the cat 5.6's for my X850XT (btw I'm from the UK too) which have some sort of heat issue that is yet to be resolved.

Just to add to my previous post... my temps are exactly the same with the 5.6 drivers. It might be a bug unique to X850XTs, e-mail ATI support and ask them about it :)

guys dw...its fine for the pe ...70 is ok...i live in READING a big town near london....neways my x850xt pe hits about 65 max and 44 on idle...btw use ati tray tool a lot better than the other thing...

Mayhs

Cheers for all the replies....

Im using the Omega 5.6 Drivers and ATI Tray Tool and ive set the fan speeds to the suggested speeds.....Seems to of help, im getting temps of no more than 73c during some heavy Doom 3 action (ATT has a great tool which you can use to flash the GPU/CPU etc temperatures up in the corner of your screen while your gaming every minute or so)

Also, Bush apparently did say that!....and ive heard a great comment made by some Yank on a quiz show which went...."Scotland? is that part of London?" genius! :D

Gonna e-mail ATI aswell just to check it out, im thinking it might of been the room temp that made card go 'Fusion Reactor' on me, it was stupidly hot and really humid that day....I'll see what i get back from ATI.

My concern is that the temps were that high before and not read right, or not being read right now.

My other guess is that something in the Cat 5.6 drivers rewrote your fan settings and set it to a lower speed.

Well I guess it could be one fo two things...the cat 5.6's simply have a fault and it will be fixed in the 5.7's or the 5.6's show the true heat temperature and the fan won't speed up to resolve the heat problems (underclocking and random restarts)

The problem with heat did start straight after installing the 5.6 cats but it also coincided with some unusually hot humid weather (upto 30c which is high for us brits) which lead me to believe that it might be the ambient temperature thats causing the card to get too hot (over 100c registered once but that was using the ATI Overdrive menu and im not sure how accurate that thing is  )

Now that the weathers gone back to its normal rainy self, i was worried that the temp was still a little high (over 70c) and that maybe the time it got really hot damaged it in some way? Though i must admit it seems to be working fine i.e normal FPS in Doom HL2 etc and normal 3DMark 05 score...

The default fan settings for the card are weird as i mentioned above. Im gonna leave em modified and see if owt develops?
