My first post here and its not a good one...
Ok, just got back from Iraq and had some money to spend so I purchased a DFI Ultra D, A64 3200+, and a OEM Sapphire x850xt this was going to be powered by an OCZ Powerstream 520. Today was the first time I was applying power to the setup. Only one stick of RAM, the video card and the keyboard were plugged into the MB. I used the PCI-Express power connector from the power supply, not the adapter that came with the video card package. Perhaps that was my first mistake. Anyway pushed the power button on the case (Lian Li PC-65)...fans come on, including video card...then the burning and smoke, I couldnt shut it down quick enough not that it would have mattered the damage was done. I do not have the technical knowledge of the x850xt's layout so I will describe what burned. Toward the front end of the card and on the top there are two silver "boxes" about 1/4" wide and about 1/4" tall. This is on the side with the fan, well what burned was on the opposite side, non-fan side. Between the two boxes on the back side is the thing that burned. It looked as bright as one of the LED's from the Ultra D. My question is what might I have done wrong? I RMA'd it back to Newegg along with the Ballistix memory that I was trying to run too. Any help or clues would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Ouch, thats harsh! Its hard to say what you did wrong, from your description it seems as though you did everything right. Was the card fully seated? Is the powersupply new? Purhaps it was a faulty PS or card, theres so many factors that could have caused this its really hard to say. That sucks man, best luck on the RMA! :(

Thanks for responding...Powersupply is brand new and it seems to me that the power connector going to the pci-e card is very "idiot proof". This is the first time in 10 years that I have anything so dramatic happen. I wish I knew what burned and since the power seemed fine to the cpu and the case fans and even the video card fan continued to run has me confused. :(
