Specs:
P4 2.4b
1GB RAM
ASUS p4pe motherboard.
ATI x850XT 256MB AGP
Cat drivers 5.9

Scores 4400 on 3dmark05.

This seems really low.

AGP fast writes on or off still the same score.
Tried setting all the CCC settings to "performance" to no apparent avail.

This replaced a 9800 PRO AGP card that got over 2400 on 3d05. Which is average.
This card, average is around 6000.

Any ideas? Anybody?

Its definately your CPU as a bottleneck, try overclocking it to about 3.0ghz, you may see a significant boost in 3Dmark score if you care.

Anybody have any other advice?

I wasn't expecting the CPU to bring the overall video performance down that much.
With the 9800PRO I get really good scores, but with this sudenly I am bottlenecked at the CPU?

as someone else said, the CPU is your bottleneck.....2.4b's are too slow these days....

that said, make sure you have the latest drivers, and make sure your ram in in dual channel configuration...

This is because your Cpu was pumpin out geometry and other shit as fast as the 9800Pro could render it, now that you have a very fast graphics card, it has to wait for the CPU to calculate the neccesary shit before it can do its thing...

So I need to upgrade. I have read that this CPU doesn't overclock worth crap.

Would an Athlon 64 3200 (ewiz 135$ special) do it up proper?

I knd of thought I would have to do this so no big deal just need to find some money somewhere.

Your 3dmark should still be higher than that...
IF you have't already, reformat if you are popping in that card over another.

Anyway, yea an 3200+ would be excellent. Pair it with an good Nf4u/sli mobo(i like the Epox) and you can run it at 2.4-2.7 with no sweat.
Even if you didn't OC it would be fine.

Thanks for your reply.
I spent some time poking around in my BIOS and I realized that it was not all set correctly. I am a noobie but I realized it wasn't even set to 133 (x4=533) and I upped the memory freq to 333. I ended up getting 5400+ in 3dmark05.

I upped it further to 2.7Ghz and 375 freq for mem. and got 5800+ 3dmark05.

Tha only game I am bummed about is FEAR, the demo is laggy even with this card, I have to set everything to medium.

DOOM3 is nice now though, haven't tried anything else yet.

Until I can get a much better cpu and ram etc, I will hold off on an upgrade. I can live with 5400. For now...
