OK I've grinned and bared it for awhile now but the constant beeping of the motherboard when playing agmes (due to my videocard hitting like ~90*C) and have been thinking maybe if I applied some AS to the core I may reduce the temps a bit? I haven't removed the heatsink yet but imagine there isn't a lot of contact (because that kind of heat isn't normal under load is it?)

Any input would be great
 
it may help. its should drop alot more when you reset the heatsink. also make shure you blow the dust out of it.
 
TBH I've never removed a heatsink before, just fitted one (and that was on a cpu) some kind cleaning agent (isoprypol or whatever I see get mentioned) should do for the thermal residue left yes?

BTW thanks, I will probably do this as I can't bare to think the videocard is that hot (even if they are designed for 125*C temperatures), around the 80's area would be much more comforting.
 
is a videocard like a processor where you have to heat it up to remove the cooler due to the thermal paste? i'm getting my cooler delivered next wed and i want to know before i start the process. i've never changed a cooler on a videocard before, but i have on processors. is it a much different or difficult task?

No you don't need to heat it up, and I've never had to heat up a CPU to take the heatsink off either.

But damn, my video card is faster than an x850XT PE and I never seen it go past 65 celcius. (I use stock cooling)

the reason you would need to heat up a cpu is to prevent it from sticking to the hsf and getting pulled of the socket and possibly bending pins... on a gpu the processor is soldiered in and has no risk of being pulled out of a socket

to the OP, did reseating it and as5 help the temps?
 
OK temps so far have improved quite a bit (unsure if I'm totally past the burning in period though). Idle I'm now looking at about 45-48*C (before was about 55*C) and under load is about 80-83*C (was 90+*C)
 
You know people always tell me that their x850's run hot, but I've never had a single problem with mine in all the good service it's givin me. I even OCed it a tad, using stock cooling, and never had a problem. Maybe it's just because the ambient in my case is so low.

Have the same cpu and board, what are your memery settings starting from the top down, I'm running mine at 2.6 so far to see if I have any problems.If your hitting 2.8 I could use some guidence that works in stead of hit and miss. Thanks .
 
My problem partly is using the dfi nf4 ultra-d moetherboard in conjunction with the zalman 7700al/cu and also I probably need a few fans to get better airflow through the case

Really? My 6600GT ran way hotter than this x800GTO^2...
 
my x850xt pe runs at around 60 degrees c when ive oc'ed it on stock cooling...
if yours is running too hot, then you have to de-dust your card or put the stock cooler on properly/replace the cooler.
if none of them work, then you should check your temps with other programmes.
 
Well just by removing the stock heatsink, cleaning up the thermal stuff and applying the AS5 and re-seating the heatsink has knocked off about 5-10*C of my idle and unde rload temperatures.
 
my x850xt runs cold to the touch idle....and under load its no where near your temps...

i have like 9 fans though

but anyways, yea 10C off your load temps is like a HUGE difference, considering all u did was replace the original thermal crap with some AS.

and atitool owns ati tray tools. u should read this thread
