I just got an x850xt with the stock cooling, and I've noticed the fan has a very high pitched whine to it that I notice when it's throttled down using ATItool. Has anyone else noticed this, or found a way to fix it? It's just pretty annoying.

nope :) which brand? sapphire? i replaced it with a Zalman VF700LED-Cu for $35

very quiet! looks hott and i don't regret spending the extra money

mine makes a loud noise due to the air but it doesnt whine...mine is sapphire too

bugger. I'm one of those people who can hear a CRT's high pitched whine when it's on...i guess not everyone can, s'why I only use LCDs. Anyway, I guess I'll just try to pick up a different cooler, or just throw chunks of dry ice at my gpu when it heats up ;p. Thanks all.

Out of interest I tried this and I too hear the high pitch sort of ringing sound. It's so bad I'm going to have to uninstall the program :p

BTW when you say hear CRT do you mean like you can hear a tv on by a sort of ringing noise? Maybe it's just me :(

That's exactly it. Some TVs and CRT moniters are so bad for me that I just can't use them because of the omnipresent high pitched ringing.

I can too. None of my friends can either, so I freaked them out once... I asked them to either turn the TV off or keep it on, while I was in another room. I was able to tell whether it was on or not every time. :D

My brother got one resently and it had a high pitch squeal. It was very annoying. So I gave him my VF700 on my 9800Pro so I wouldn't have to listen to the high pitched squeal anymore! But I got his AIW 9800Pro with AC Silencer Rev. 3.

He and I experimeted before we replaced stock cooler and we could not get fan to stop squealing.

Hmmm, thanks for the info. I've been thinking about just picking up a Zalman cooler for it myself. It's just pretty annoying, I bought this card used and for the great price of $150 total, and to have to pay another $30 (20% of the card's price) to replace the stock HSF kind of bugs me. Anyone know of a good deal on an aftermarket cooler for an x850xt?

THAT's what the noise has been? Ugh. Would getting... say, an ATI Silencer help with the problem? I had originally planned at leaving this card as a stopgap until I upgrade to some sort of PCIe type thing much later, thus spending little to no money on it, but yeah. I can hear the noise, plus the computer is in my room, plus it stays on at night often. Some days it's bad, some it isn't.

If you can find an AC Silencer for your card that would be just fine. You don't have to get anything super expensive. You could even get the VF700 AlCu just to get by until upgrade.

Those of you who have X850XT's or the an ATI card with that cooler, if it emits a a high pitched whine, take a pencil eraser and gently push fan housing on card and see if pitch changes.

We had originally thought PSU was making high pitched squeal, then we swapped PSU for a different one and squeal was still there. The thought maybe motherboard was problem until I started puching on fan housing on graphics card. Low and behold the ptiched changed! So we fired up ati tool and set RPM to 0% and squeal disappeared! We promptly shut the computer down and replaced heatsink.
