x850XP and heat

Had this card about six months. When I'm not running anything, its 40c. I installed ATI Tool, ran the "find artifacts" using the base, unoverclocked setting, and it runs nearly 90c. Normal? Any ideas?
 
doesn't seem too normal...

I had one with an AC silencer on it and it never broke 55c under load and that is in a case with an 800rpm intake and exhaust fan.


even with stock it never broke like 60c..

reseat the heatsink with some AS5?
 
90C! :eek: Earlier grave for the card. I didn't even bother putting an aftermarket heatsink to replace my X850XT's stock heatsink, I never go over 60c in load. It idles mostly at 38c. My case has good airflow, though. 3 35 cfm 80mm fans and 2 45cfm 80mm fans. Make sure you have good airflow in your case and clean off any dust on the video card's heatsink.
 
So, my best course of action would be to reapply the heat sink paste and give it a cleaning? A bit scared to do that actually, I replaced the heat sink on my 9800 Pro, and it messed it up (couldn't run any 3D applications after) which lead me to buying the x850.
 
Trying cleaning out the hsf on it if case is very dusty also hows air flow in your case.
 
Cleaned the dust from the card, temps dropped from 43c to 39c. I'll actually take it out later and do a better cleaning, of the entire case this time.
 
I'm going to try removing the heat sink/fan from this and cleaning it out, putting new heat sink paste in, and putting the same on back on. Couple of questions:

1. What is currently used to tranfer heat with the ATI supplied HSF? Is it heat sink paste or a pad? Want to know in case I have to return the card so I can get it back pretty much the way it was.

2. Any webpage that shows the process for removing and reinstalling or replacing the hsf?

3. I've run ATI Tool which gives me an overclock speed of 567/543 when I set the fan to run at 65% above 60c. With the fan setup this way, it keeps the core below 70c. Should I just keep this setup or replace it with something else?

No, Vista is already installed. Simple fact is: Your card is running hot and you already posted yourself what you're gonna do. What else do you need? I mean, search google for you to find out if there is a website that shows how to remove and reattach the heatsink?

I did. Couldn't find one that deals with the x850xt, that's why I asked here. Maybe we should all just stop posting in forums and just use Google?
 
Go to the website of arctic silencer and follow the instructions there on how to remove the heatsink. Then just reverse the process...

Just looking at the X850XT cards on the Newegg site, it would appear that removing the HSF is quite simple.

It looks like you need to remove the 3 screws holding the RAM heat plate on. Please note that I am not 100%, but it looks like this must be removed because the screws go through the plate, through the PCB, then secures into the HSF.

Once that is removed you need need only remove the 2 screws, one on each end of the retention spring, and the HSF should come right off.

Other than the heatplate on the RAM, that is exactly how the stock HSF was held on for my X800XT AIW.
