x850 xt problems!

My ati x850 XT has started acting odd. When running a 3d game the core temps will shoot all the way to ~110c and then locks the system. I have tried cleaning the card and applying new thermal grease (this helped a little as now it only hits ~98c). This card from day one has run hot (as in the entire card could give a second degree burn after only 5 minutes of bf2). I also have noticed a high pitched buzz (almost inaudible its so high). Could a part be dying and that's causing the core to heat up so fast and high?

BTW

older games (~3 years) don't seem to cause as much of a problem as bf2 and hl2 do (I can play eve-online for many hours with the cpu fan on full and have no problems but can't play hl2 for more than 5 minutes even at 100% fan speed).

I have a 480w thermaltake powersupply that is just over a year old and is clean inside so I know it has enough power.

Any help or suggestions are welcome.

mine runs nearly as hot as yours. I also reapplied the heatsink paste, and when I did, noticed that the heatsink actually have circular machine marks on it. I'll be lapping it when I get a chance, hope it helps.
 
Are you using the stock heatsink? If so, it sucks. It won't even go past 40% fan speed when you're playing games. You need to grab ATITool (preferably the 0.25 beta one) and go under Fan Settings and have it set to your preferences. Like if it hits 50c, force the fan to spin at 50%, and at 60c, then 75% fan, then 70c, 100% fan.
 
Thing is it never gave me a problem. Just all of a sudden started getting this hot and locking up (even at 100% fan speed). Anyway I got a nice new x1900gt to replace it but would love to build a second rig with this card(once amd cuts prices again) if I could get it working again.
 
ati stock coolers suck...

I chucked mine and attached a zalman vf700... I will probably replace it with my vf900 since I discovered it *will* fit afterall.

Anyway, even with the vf700 my temps never get above 60C.
 
LOL, my temps don't get above 60C with a stock cooler...

The OP says that his PSU is "clean inside" but that does not mean it's outputting sufficiently. Check the rails. There could be something funky going on with the PSU.
 
I plan on getting a new heatsink for my new card(should have it thursday) but the stock cooler, like pwmk2 said' never went much above 60c with the stock cooler (I did hit 70c a few times while playing hl2 for 6 hours).

Running atitool and scanning for defects works for about 15 minutes Then defects start showing (as the temps rise into the mid 80's). Once I kill the bench the core drops to ~60c almost instantly (so the heatsink is doing it's job).'

As for the psu I'll find out thursday when I get my x1900gt. I assume if the psu is a fault I'll have problems with this new card (as it needs a 420w psu over the x850's 350w).

sadly this is now the second ati card I have had die (on par with the nvidia cards I have had).

In order

geforce 2mx440se (dead pixle pipeline?) (jaton)
geforce 4 ti 4600 (bad trace on pcb) (msi)
ati 9800XT (dead pipeline) (powercolor)
and now perhaps my x850XT (who know the problem) (Sapphire)

In my case, since reapplying the hs paste, I've seen a pretty good drop in temp. Lapping the heat sink, I think, will make as large a difference as would buying a new hsf. The ATI one doen't look that bad, if it were properly manufactured.

I live in Texas... ambient temp is warm... besides, 60C full load is not bad for a videocard.
 
I replaced my x850xt with a x1900gt and it works fine. Still would like to figure out whats wrong with my x850xt though for a second rig.
 
well I can give you a couple guesses.

there is a spacer around the GPU core... it may be keeping your heatsink from making good contact.

you could have a bad temp sensor, but I doubt this. You can try measuring with a thermistor if you have one.

-- I can see a clear gap when looking under the heatsink so I don't think this could be the problem.

-- Even if the temp sensor went bad that alone would not cause lockups or atrifacts when I set the fan at 100% all the time.


I'll be buying a replacement heatsink and see if it solves the problem. If not ebay will be getting another paperweight (if I can even get $50 back that would be fine).
