x850 XT initial benchmarks

Hopefully some good driver support will really open this card up. ATI are known for not rushing drivers.

So what's new with the X850 XT? Last I heard it was going to be a simple refresh.

Huh? Just overclock a regular x800xtpe a little, and bench it - you'll get a pretty good idea of how the x850xtpe performs..

PCI-E only @ 540 / 570 or 590. I'm wondering how well they overclock compared to your standard XT PE or XT.

damn krauts, I can't understand them (I am German, so no offence to ya germans here)

Awesome speed. That refresh is totally worth it.
Yeah... we've all never needed anything in life like those extra 3FPS.

I thought it was German, I can read some of it anyways and I don't know Croation. (sp)

it probably has more to do with yeilds on ati's part than actual performance, thats just what I'd think though, it seems kinda early to be bring out a refresh unless the yields on them are better

The refresh as far as I recall is not about a speed increase but availability. They should be about the same performance but you can actually get them in stock.

Give's the consumer a bit of extra choice in current PCI-E markets ;) Which is good!

Well I must say trying to get any INFO, about this new Card is like trying to Pry open an Aligators Jaws. Why would someone want to do that, Oh I don't know for fun maybe :D
AnyWho, here is what I found so far:

ATi's answer to NVIDIA is scheduled to be announced tomorrow. The Inquirer has managed to get the skinny first though.

This is what these cards will look like and there will be no less than three models. As hinted a few weeks agao already, this is a dual slot cooling solution which we know so well from NVIDIA's flagships. The products will still be based on 0.13 mcron fabrication process but with a better optimised architecture. I'm not quite sure if Shader model 3 is integrated though as it's based on the x800. It would be a pre, but not at all a problem as 2.0+ as you know, is quite sufficient as well.

So basically the upcoming X850 generation of ATI cards is based on a yet optimised R423 silicon armed with additional power management features. Don’t forget ATI is using new cooler and thermal throttling architecture.

The flagship of this line will be the Radeon X850XT Platinum edition which is clocked to at 540MHz core and 590/1180MHz GDDR 3 memory. The card has two DVI-I slots. The second in the X850 hall of fame, the Radeon X850 XT, is clocked to 520MHz core and 540, 1080MHz memory and just like the X850XT PE has sixteen pipelines. The third solution is called the Radeon X850 PRO and it's clocked to 520MHz core too, and 540, 1080MHz memory but will come with twelve pipelines. It will launch these cards on the first of December early in the morning but expects to have those cards on the market in early January 2005. ATI will claim the X850 will have much better availability than the disastrously not available X800 XT PE AGP card.

The X850 XT Platinum edition will be available for $549. ATI just manage to break all the limits of common sense with this pricing. I believe that they want to ensure that not many people will go out and buy them. Many people would like them, but only a few can afford them. ATI certainly wants to make some revenues from these babies.

The X850 XT will cost $499 when available, and just like X850 XT PE will have dual DVI slots, TV out and sixteen pipelines. Just a slightly different clock. The X850 PRO and its twelve pipelines, DVI, VGA and TV-out connectors will cost $399. ATI claims that X850 XT Platinum edition will end up twenty per cent faster than Geforce 6800 Ultra in 3Dmark05, almost forty per cent faster in Far Cry and around 55 per cent faster in Unreal Tournament 2004. Those numbers come from ATI.

Make note of the fact that the cards are PCI-Express only.

Update: Seems that the announcment will not be tomorrow as I just received this really long and extensive email back from ATI:

We're not announcing X850 tomorrow...

Strangely enough almost any ATI Europe PR manager is indeed in Munich from Monday to Wednesday though. Aah, there's nothing like the nice rush you can get from a new high-end product release :)

ha, well at least they are temporarily delaying it. We dont need another x800 XT stock problem! :p

Little confused as to where is goes in the product line up, I thought this was just a product refresh like the 9600/9800 XT but it looks like it's full blown new line.

So I'm wondering where the "older" X800 line is at in the overall picture, I can't really see the X850 series driving down the cost of them this early. Theres not a whole lot different between them and the X800 series.

I'm a confused Panda.

Ummm M3  :D and it just ads to already Confused state that im in already.
But now here is another Question to ad to the confusion
Will this new Card be able to be water cooled? from the pic it does not look like you can take that fan off......

Wow, I am not impressed with their hyped performance gain that doesnt exist. Just marketing with nothing to actually back their claims I guess. Kinda makes me lose more respect for ATI. If they had just said "we can't get the xt pe's off the production line, so we need to change the process" I would understand. Instead they made it sound like it would be a fabulous upgrade. Disappointing I must say, but not unexpected given ATI's recent trend.

Found some more pics of the Card they are Big so I will just put a clickable thumbnail here

Amazing...simply overclock the core and memory, and add a blower on it to compensate, and call it new technology....oh yeah, and make it available now, but only for PCI-E, which AMD64 doesn't have a chipset for yet, and is the best platform to run gaming on...yeah, 454 big block doesn't do you shit if you're running on treadless tires. I'll stay with my 6800 Ultra thanks :p

I was going to go ATi again for the new generation, but everyone knows how hard it was to get your hands on a x800 XT PE. So I am in the nVidia boat for a while, hopefully Ati can have a much more successfull product launch, rather than 6 month paper launch.

I like the note at the end of the [H] review of this card. That brute force isn't always going to be the answer but can be added at some point to help things along. I think that overall ATI is the loser here. With a 140mhz deficit nVidia can quickly overcome this little problem by adding brute force of their own. Assuming that the 6800 architecture can handle it that is. I am interested in seeing how the elusive "Ultra Extreme" stacks up in this lineup. Or how a 100mhz OCd Ultra would fair.

Whatever the case, kudos to ATI for at least bringing this to the table and upping the bar once more between these two companies. :)

Its pretty much probably what they should have released in the first place.. (IMO)

The X800XL looks to be the most interesting card.. $249 with 256mb of Ram and 12 pipelines..

If that card actually shows up in quanitity and if there is a sudden rush of AMD PCIe mobos that could be a nice midrange card for new system buyers for Q1-Q2 05

Certainly a card that Dell will jump all over for their systems...

Its an odd time still in this industry...lots of enthusiasts have great AGP based setups that can take faster processors and they just need new videocards...but yet most of the good mid range cards are getting released as PCIe only with the AGP cards sitting at $350++ as viable upgrades..

kudos for Nvidia getting that 6600GT out as an AGP part..

I thought the note at the end was stupid, you spend the entire article trying to show what a card can do at a given resolution and then you make some totally off the wall statement about superior architectures and brute force that has nothing to do with the real world performance of the cards.
If the 6800u truly was the superior architecture they'd be pumping out 6800u's that blow the x800/x850xt away, but they're not.

As far as the refresh its mostly due to increased yields, the speed bump is just a bonus. People had the same reaction to the 9800pro, but as soon as prices dropped because of improved yields there wasnt much whining.

Kind of how I felt too after reading it.
To much speculation with the ending comment.

What I dont' like about the new naming system...the x850 pro is the faster of the new yields...OK COME ON...You (ati) are so trying to confuse people with this. THAT speed increase though does sound interesting.

So ATI is just restructuring their product line up with the X850 Series.

I'm not impressed at all, a slight speed bump that means close to nothing in game performance and a new (dual slot ;) ) cooler. That's it? They didn't even add anything new?

Atleast the X800 XLs look interesting

Anyone else wondering how ATI will perform with this current rule of "brute force" when it comes to using 32FP?

The X850 is a good line, it's what the X800 line should have been from the beginning IMO.

Any else think it was kind of stupid to go with PCIe without an AGP counterpart at launch?

Yeap.
Goes with both companies. Everyone doesn't have PCIe boards yet and people looking to get a new videocard most likly just want to do that: Upgrade the videocard.

I think PCIe should be PHASED in rather than fist in the ass.

Can't say I'm impressed at all...though availability is HUGE for ATi right now, so if these new cards fix the availability problem...that's more than enough improvement for me...

I think PCIe should be PHASED in rather than fist in the ass.

If they try to do that, they will only be fisting themselves. There is just too much money to be made selling to the currently installed AGP base (which outnumbers PCI-e by maybe 10:1?) to ignore. To not have AGP versions of their major products would be finiancial suicide for several years to come.

Looks like ati made a great vid card  wow just wow 15mhz-20mhz increase. just amazing. makes me want to buy one now....

I might be reading this wrong?

But isn't that what I just said?

AGP cards should be still made more first.
Slowly working towards PCIe cards seems (to me) the smarter choice. Motherboard companies should start making more PCIe boards and phasing OUT the AGP...although I guess that just comes around full circle...hmmm.

OK this:
Make the availability of PCIe cards a little more rare with AGP still on top
With each new phase/refresh/architecture, make the AGPs a little harder and PCIe easier
Do the same with motherboards.

Rather than full steam ahead for PCIe and trickle AGP later

well true... It is just a refresh

the X850Pro though is a 40 mhz and 90mhz memory so that seems better at least

I think I'll just hold on to my old POS X800XT-PE a little longer, but I would like to get that overclocking program ATI put out with the X850.

I think it is good that ATI is coming out with this refresh. It will up availability and wait for it.... CUT DOWN ON POWER CONSUMPTION!!!! I don't know about you, but I am not a big fan of having to dole out $150+ for a power supply just to get rock solid performance. Sure the PSU's at that price point is the gormet shit of that area, but what about SFF systems? I am sure it will add a bit more comfort that your SFF PC is running on less juice than it would be at a bigger fab process. Everyone bitching that this wasn't a bigger difference than previous generation... shut up. When was the last time a major shift in architecture was done in such a short amount of time??? Im sure they have been working on the R4xx series since R300 debuted on the market. Likewise, the next major generation is being worked on as we speak. I will be buying one because it will be more readily available, and that I life the fact it will cut down on power consumption.

Ok i tested the crytek new demo....jeez its way better then awesome...
my oldie r9700np gets avarge of 13 fps on 1024x768x32bit and 4xAA
and the quality is awesome...i couldnt find any changes between mine and x850...even in the shaders...the demo is awesome!

They didnt call it new tech, care to show me where?

NF4 boards are going to be out in masses very soon, with PCI-E. Your bias is almost trancendz worthy.
