X850 problems

I have a buddy who just bought an X850 (PCI-E version) card in addition to a Fatal1ty mobo. He's having a problem getting the system to display anything. It won't boot or post.

He's replaced the video card from a connect3d to a Sapphire one with no change, it still does not boot. He also took the motherboard in to a shop and the tech there plugged in a spare PCI-E card and it booted fine.

What could possibly be the problem? His PSU is a 480 watt so he's got plenty of power there. One other question is what this additional yellow plug on the video card is for: http://www.hardocp.com/image.html?image=MTEwMTgwNDg4NHpBWU1uaHJFZ2ZfMl81X2wuanBn

He's plugged in the 6 pin power connector, but he can't figure out what goes in the yellow one. I don't know if this is preventing anything from posting, but we're stumped.

Any help would be... err... helpful.
 
it sounds like your friends card it defective since you have change it with another card i would RMA it if possible. and that little yellow thing on the cards board is another way of powering it (i think but dont try it) but u dont need that for powering the card.
 
Dude, the yellow plug is for VIVO (video-in, video-out) and it... it's not the power plug. The power goes to the black molex plug.

oh @#$% sorry everyone i know it was for something but i forgot thanx for reminding me that i fell so @#$%ing stupid.
 
Don't assume that the power supply is good because it says 480Watts.
The brand name and the Amp rating on the +12V rail is what matters.
Lots of companies put really crappy generic PSUs in their cases so that people will buy them.

Enermax, Antec and Thermaltight are the good brands.

Find the model number on your PSU, pop it into google and find out what it is.
 
It wont post? or is it just not showing a display?

I had to swtich to VGA on my X850XTPE and MSI K8N Neo Platinum to get the screen to display. Once I got windows installed I switched wires to DVI and all was well. I have since then reinstalled Windows 3 times (dont ask) and have not had to switch back to VGA.

But when I flashed my BIOS I did have to switch back to VGA. Dont know why, but when I was done falshing, with noting on the screen (no signal) I had to turn off the box. Number 1 rule when flashing BIOS, DONT TURN OFF COMPUTER!!! I damn near shit myself when I eventually hit the power button. But all was well.
 
1. Nothing displays on the screen where it usually would post. I do not know if he has a PC speaker hooked up to give a diagnostic "beep" code.

2. Yes, the power is connected to the correct plug on the video card (I'd like to see someone try to hook a molex plug up to that vivo port.) I was simply curious as to what the yellow connector was used for. Thanks for clarifying this.

3. I'm going to check and see if he is using the DVI or RGB plug on the video card. this might be the answer.

guess not well im buying the powercolor radeon x850xt NON VIVO (i know im stupid) 256mb PCI-e on monday hope i dont have problems.
