I recently purchased a Built by ATI X850 Pro 256MB AGP for my system. I was looking into moving to PCI-E, but at only $110 this AGP card was too good to pass up.

I have seen unconfirmed rumors on forums that some of these cards potentailly be unlocked to 16 pipelines (instead of 12). I had also read on a forum that you could possibly tell by the serial number?!?

Can anyone confirm/dispel this for me please?

Its possible! I unlocked the pipelines in my x850pro. I bought two off of ebay but only one could be unlocked even though they looked identical. There are guides here ---->

and here
http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/overclocking/vidcard/34.

Here's a tip though, once you have unlocked the pipelines using the modified flashrom and a XT bios, you must use the regular non-modified flashrom and copy back a x850 pro bios so the videocard fan will work (there has to be a x850 pro bios or else the fan wont run)

Thanks!

After reading the atricles and doing some more research it looks like these two conditions have to be true to unlock the X850Pro to 16 pipelines

1. VIVO model with the cd type connector
2. Samsung 1.6 memory chips

Looks like some of the cards shipped with Samsung 2.0 chips, and some with the Samsung 1.6 chips. Can you check the two X850 Pro's you cards and verify this.

Anyone else know?

coolxboxgamer - Read a little further on the page, they start talking about the X850 Pro

The serial numbers on the mem chips are identical on both cards that i have, they are also both vivo so i dont know why one card wont unlock and the other will.

OK, I must be doing something wrong here. Can someone please help me get to the holy grail (16 unlocked pipelines and a fan that runs)

- Card came at 500/500, overclocked it to a solid 590/610(higher than XT speeds)
- downloaded the flash program and the x850xt AGP bios file
- booted into dos mode
- made a backup copy of the bios on the card called origbios.bin
- flashrom -f -p 0 x850xt.bin (loaded successfully)
- re-booted computer back into dos mode (noticed fan wasn't spinning)
- flashrom -f -p 0 origbios.bin (loaded successfully)
- re-booted into dos mode (verified fan was working)
- booted into windows and I'm back to the original 12 pipelines and a working fan

Net gain: Nothing lol seems like when I made the fan work I lost my 4 pipeline potential

How were you able to get the fan working AND have the extra pipelines? Did you use a different bios than the original after flashing with the XT bios? Did one of the applications magically remember that the card had 16 pipelines? I am sooooo confused :)~

Check your other thread for an answer and solution.

You should just buy a Zalman VF700 GPU cooler series. They use a separate power plug for the fan. It might be the only way to keep your card at X850XT. Don't get the ATI Silencer since they plug on the PCB where the stock cooler's fan is plugged to.

I picked up an X850 pro agp vivo and for me it was impossible to get 16 pipes.

See that little laser cut in the first picture? Well it was present on my card so I couldn't soft mod it to 16 pipes. I have, however, heard sucess stories about unlocking them so I guess it's just a flip of the coin on whether you can or not.
