I know this card might be a museum piece to you guys, but I was hoping someone have some experience with this card. Currently my x800xl reach to 83C while playing CSS, and after 10 min it starts artifacting. Is this a normal temp for under load? I have a generic case in a room thats about 76~ F, I have my side panel taken off and it still heats up. I turned 100% of gpu fan and made sure its running, but other than that is there anything I can do to keep this heat down short of replacing the card?

x800xl heat problems?

I don't remember what my xl stock temps were, I've had a vf-900 on it for a long time now. You don't have much chance replacing the stock thermal pad with paste, either, because there's a gap without the pad IIRC. Get a vf900 if you can, idles at 35 with load at 50 iirc since it's been a while since I've gamed on it.

get a after market heat sink and fan Zalman makes some good ones my friend has a XT PE and he put a good Zalman on and it is working flawlessly and it is more quiet and cooler than before.
Same thing happened to my friend's x800xl. Turned out the problem was a clogged up hsf. He unscrewed the top plate off the hsf and the side were the air is pushed from the fan to the other side of the hsf was clogged up with dust.

I had an Arctic Silencer 5 rev. 2 on mine and it was very cool running at full load and with an overclock. Definitely no more than the 50's range.
Ahh turned out it was dust... And I just almost killed my computer cleaning it 
So I just took the faceplate off, it was literally clogged with dust.... Cleaned it up and peaking at about 60 C after! While I was cleaning my gpu, i decided to clean up the cpu sink too, but I forgot to plug my fan connector back in afterwards. I left my comp on to encode some videos for a few hours and when i got back my computer froze, I restarted and check the temp on my cpu.... 94C !!! My cpu was oc'ed and overvolted. I had to use mittens to quickly pull the sink off and I could smell some minor burn, but rebooted and thx god it still works!
