NewEgg has a Sapphire X800XL 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI-Express x16 for $500. How does this compare to a x850xt or x850xt pe?
 
From what I understand, by the time games and common software can fully utilize the 512mb video memory the x800 series cards wont be worth much anyway.
It sure sounds tuff though.
 
well, there is a review of the x800xl 512mb card now here at hardocp

however, i reviewed this card myself on TheTechLounge and I've presented many more benchmarks to give you a better full picture of what the card has to offer performance-wise. whereas [H] only compared the 512mb and 256mb version with a 6800 gt, i compared 5 cards total: X850 XT PE, 6800 Ultra, X800 XT, X800 XL 512MB, X800 XL 256MB

In addition, I also tested at more resolutions and video quality settings, in some games (such as HL2) i even tested at 2048x1536 to really test out what this whole "High-Definition Gaming" thing is that we have been hearing about.

Basically our findings are the same, but at least check out the HL2 page to see the difference 512MB makes there.

Good job on the review, I like how you did it.

I wouldn't of guessed it would make such a difference at any resolution or settings.

actually, it makes such a big difference in HL2 that I decided to continue using it in my system instead of putting the X850 XT PE back in. go figure. i don't play anything except CS: Source for my own enjoyment, so I don't need the extra performance of the X850 XT PE in the other games, and as you saw in my review the X800 XL 512MB actually has a pretty good advantage, particularly at high resolutions with high video settings in HL2.

Also, I really must say that "high-definition" gaming is sweet. i wasn't able to keep it at that resolution though because i didn't feel like getting used to playing at it (it 'feels' different, just like going from 800x600 to 1600x1200 feels different). plus i primarily use my Dell 2005FPW for all my computing, I only use the ViewSonic P225fb for video card testing, so now I game at 1680x1050 with about 4xAA/8xAF. fun stuff.
