x800pro > x800xl??

yeah X800pro has 12 pipes, X800XL has 16 pipes. I think the vertex shader counts are different too (6 on the XL, I think 5 on the pro...maybe 4)

the x800pro has a diffrent core it uses the r423--same as the 800xt

if you look close at the card you'll see that the x 800pro needs a extra molex type power connection--the x800xl has the smaller die and requires less power.

the x800pro has 12 pipes--but has faster RAM 1.6ns or 2.0 -- the x800pros can be modded into a XT with either a bios flash and ot with a conductive trace--most of the time

my x800pro modded to xt is a bit faster than a XL with 16 pipes --about as fast as a xl--with 12 pipes @xt speeds --a little slower than a XP at stock speeds.

thre isn't much diffrence --but a XL is a better deal since it comes with the 16pipes. some x800pros won't take the full mod to 16piplines

what a x800xl is a sort of hybred-castrated x850-- castrated by having slower ram--as opposed to the x800pro which a castrated x800xt with 12 pipes and de-clocked core.but the same ram as the XT.

even more confusion--the x850pro--a castrated x850XT--but only 12 pipelines--lol

i can't say ive had all these cards--but the ones i have fooled withs seem to be very good cards though-- the easy road would be get the x800xl--and just overclock x800xt speeds-- however most xl's won't make that good of an overclock --but at least your certain to get 16pipelines

ps--monark had the x800xl on sale the other day for $250 new retail box--free shipping--check with the hot-deals section--

not sure if it holds true these days, but awhile back all the X800XL cards with VIVO or AIW were actually X800XT cores and would clock higher than your "true" x800xl

I debated heavily over this and in the end I went with the xl. I originally thought of getting the pro with the mindset to unlock and clock but after reading numerous threads it appears as if the pci-e's are very hard to unlock. It just seemed like way too much trouble to go through, then on top of that you have to keep it cool. I just sprung for the xl. Was like the same price basically.

keep in mind that, last I knew, ONLY vivo versions of the pro can unlock. That's how it was when they first came out, at least.

Also it should be mentioned that the X800XL is a pretty poor overclocker because it's on TSMC's "value" 110nm line. (well they only have one 110 nm line...but it's not a low-k line or anything) So if you're interested in overclocking by a bit, then a moddable x800pro is the better bet. Those OC very well since it's the same beautiful low-k 130nm process used in the x800xt/x850.

i have seen a number of non-vivo's unlock--however they were all AGP with 2.ons ram

non vivo-pci-express--low probability of a un-lock

some of the vivos with the 2.0 ram will unlock--but others won't

most of the vivos with 1.6ns ram will unlock--as far as i know of.

what is going on it the cores get cherry picked--so you end up with a few that don't have the extra pipes to unlock-- i think thai is what is going on with the 850pro (but it is just my WAG)

otherwise--there is no point of even making a 850pro as a XT would be better --although--if the 850 pro has 16 pipes with 4 disabled-- a simple bios flash might bring them back --that is if you happen to have a "good " core.

i do know that the later x800pros--were more likely to only have 12pipelines--most of the early ones i saw would mod to 16pipes-- i would not buy a x800pro expecting to get 16pipes as i don't think as many of the later cores have the full 16. but that is just a guess on my part.
grab bag on the cores--kinda like overclocking a cpu--a good one once in a while--but the others ??? who knows--lol
