x800pro or x1600pro?

i have the x800pro (agp) and i have been getting the itch to upgrade to PCI-e after i got my new +4200. which is better? the x800 pro or the x1600pro? i want a video card that is atleast on par with or better then the x800pro. I dont want to spend ~$350 on a x1900xt, because of the release of the new cards. I just want to get my system ready for the new dx10 cards coming out, and obviously agp isnt helping :)

I'm going to stick with socket 939 for now, i just got a 4200x2. I'm going to take it out of my abit-AV8 and put it in a DFI Lanparty UT CFX3200-DR, since its PCI-e based i need a vid card like i said that is on par if not better then the x800pro.

Sorry if this post makes me look like a freaking noob, please bare with me :)
 
The X800PRO is better than the X1600PRO.

Something about as good as the X800PRO... I'd probably aim for the X1800GTO, then. It's better, but the next step down (X1600XT) isn't as good.
 
I would suggest getting in on one of those sub/near-100$ deals for the x850xt's if you don't want to spend that much. Performance will be better than a x1600pro for sure, heck its still more powerfull than a x1600xt. Sure the 1600pro supports HDR in non-source games but it dosn't have the balls to run it anyway. Moving up the price ladder a little bit you could go for a 7600GT at around 150-160ish. Guess it depends how long you think you will be using this card.
 
dont get a PCI-E x800. get an upgrade of your current card, the following reasons are why,

Direct X 10 games arent going to be out for quite some time.

by the time direct x 10 games do come out we will be into at least the 2nd generation of cards.

get at least a x850XT or a 7900GT for around 200.

much more life out of a 7900GT but obviously a little more money.
 
i wouldnt get the 1600...no way no how. The 1800 sounds better or something on the nvidia front such as their 7600gt might hold u over. I wouldnt spend no more than 125-175 on anything if your plan is to wait for dx10.

...still waiting for dx10 could be a long one. good luck!
 
thanks for all the responses, i think i'm going to go with a x850XT. I'm not hurting for money and it wont be a problem for me to spend $200 on a vid card instead of a $100 for a x1600. BUT i wont spend the money for a crazy 1900xt crossfire system, with the changes coming out. Who knows how freakin long its going to take Microsoft to come out with Vista.

I can play any game on the market with my current set up, x800pro. Sure i cant Run FEAR at 1280x1024 with everything turned up, but I want me computer ready for Crysis when it comes out. I am a huge fan of Far Cry, and seeing those previews for Crysis has really got me thinking of what i'm going to need to run that game with all the eye-candy on. I think its going to take top of the line EVERYTHING for it to look as good as it does in the previews, when it comes out. I just want to be ready as much as i can, so i just have to upgrade the vid card/s when it comes out.

Sorry if i sound like a freaking noob :( but i am kinda lost here as i've been out of the "scene" for awhile.
