ive lately been considering getting a new graphics board or a new screen..im leaning towards gfx board now cuz my 19" viewsonic crt can suffice for quite a while still. basically i was leaning towards evga 6800GT but im not so sure. the games im planning on playing are WoW, FT, HL2/CS:S CoD:UO, among others. with CS:S out ive been wondering..is it true that the x800s actually did worse than the 6800GT in the CS:S demos? my 9600XT isn't cutting it in BFV, D3/FC demos..etc. i found last night that i can barely play BFV on 1024 w/ med settings and 20 bots offline. i was like  so needless to say im looking for a significant upgrade. i want to be able to play at 1600 w/ high settings and decent aa/fsaa etc and the 9600XT doesnt deliver the goods for newer titles consistently. im so confused on which is better..i've currently got an ATi and i really like it but i just cant bring myself to want the x800pros based on the reviews..am i missing something????!! plz help me =/ ..i need more info than what the nvidia boosters can give me =[

im looking to order from newegg..budget is no more than $400 +/- $30 (x800pro of some kind; the line im looking at as alternative to the GT). i also plan on ordering a new PSU from them to replace my cheap arse generic psu..im thinking that that'll run around 80-90 for the zalman 400W i was looking at.

anyway thx..any personal CS:S experiences or with the other games using an x800pro would be more helpful than the reviews..

If its between the x800 pro and the 6800 GT. Id say get the 6800 GT, why you ask?

x800 pro = 12 pipes
6800GT = 16 pipes and can overclock to ULTRA speeds

If you need anymore info feel free to pm me and ill show you benchmarks ;) .

SaViOr

if you get a VIVO x800pro, you can get those extra pipelines with a simple flash, and even possibly overclock to XTPE speeds.

if you don't want to do that, i would get a 6800gt.

yup, thats what I'd say.

the only way I'd get an X800 Pro over a GT is if the card is a VIVO model that can accept the XT PE soft mod with artifacting seven ways to Sunday. :p

I think you'll be happy with either card - they're both pretty awesome performers at stock speeds. However, the GT has the performance edge in most games and a very high percentage can overclock to 6800U speeds and beyond. But don't let anyone tell you the X800Pro is a poor performer - that's rubbish.

I'm very happy with my X800pro VIVO flashed to X800XTPE. I run most of my games at the highest settings with no problems. here's a couple of benchmark scores for ya...

Aquamark-------------62,499
3dmark 2001 SE---22,284
3dmark03-------------12,094
3dmark05-------------4322

And I even have my card toned down a bit from XTPE speeds just because I'm paranoid about pushing the card too much. I've actually had it running quite a bit higher than stock XTPE speeds with no problems.

hmm im confused about what this VIVO is. i thought it meant video in video out..right? i know that the X800XTPE has 16 pipes like the GT but that the Pro only has 12. what about the VIVO makes it better? does it have all 16 but some are locked or something? i suppose given my knowledge on "flashing" (i dont even know what that means :/ ) and overclocking i shouldn't even attempt such things. and is it stable/no artifacts at PE speeds? someone said that it would artifact alot. thanks for the advice

The VIVO's don't have the extra 4 pipelines physically cut, they're just disabled in the video card BIOS. If you flash (replace) the BIOS with an XT PE BIOS, all of those extra pipelines become enabled. You can't do it with normal x800 Pro's because the pipes are physically cut.

Between the two, I chose the PE over the Ultra essentially, but since I bought the card from someone who could guarantee the OC's, it is a risk. The 6800GT to Ultra speeds has less risk involved, but I haven't heard of many x800 Pro VIVO's not making it up to PE speeds, although it can happen from both sides.

Toss a coin. They're pretty much equal. If you're going to be using AA / AF a lot, as I do, I'd go for the VIVO. Instead of playing D3 at 1600, I use 1280 w/ 2xAA / 16xAF, although it's not like I actually play D3, but that's another story. UT2004 at 1600 with 2xAA / 16xAF, a certain MMO beta I technically can't mention runs great at 1600, couldn't be smoother.

hmm ok i think i understand a bit better now what the flashing is thx. the only question is if i got a VIVO would i know how to do it safely ^^

i currently run things at 1280 w/ high settings and decent aa/af..but id like to be running at 1600 with highest settings and more aa..get rid of those darn jaggies :p and from what i understand the x800s do better with aa than the 6800s. since i dont really plan on playing D3 the lower performance that the ATis deliver in that title arent an issue for me really. the only ultra high graphics FPS that im going to be running is HL2/CS:S etc. and the ATis should deliver good performance in that.

a certain mmo beta you cant mention eh? ^^ i think we both know that that means either EQ2 or WoW ;)

oh one more question: does anyone know if the sapphire x800pro still comes with the HL2 coupon? it says in the review on gamepc that they do but has it since been discontinued? i cant find any mention of it on newegg or sapphire's site..nor have i seen it elsewhere. thx

For once I'm in total agreement with the rest of the nuckleheads that posted. Get the X800pro only if its a ViVo, unfortunately there is no definate way to tell. Look online for serial #'s from Compusa..you can softmod a Vivo into an XT PE quite easily unlocking the extra 4 pipes. Otherwise get the GT.

what do you mean no definite way to tell? it says VIVO in the product name if its VIVO..

I believe he's referring to retail. Some of the x800 Pro's from ATI came as VIVOs instead of standard Pro's. Online always states whether or not it's a VIVO though...

a stock X800 Pro is a poor performer compared to a 6800 GT for the simple (and well known) fact that the 6800 GT has the full 16 rendering pipelines and the X800 Pro doesnt.

but like I said above, if you can manage to find an X800 Pro thats a VIVO model and successfully flash it to an XT PE, then thats a whole different story.

then and only then will that X800 Pro whip the 6800 GT.

argh im still confused :( what about the VIVO makes it able to be flashed to PE speeds? then again in the 2 months or so when ill be purchasing the PEs might actually be available

EDIT: what is the difference between the X800XT and the X800XTPE?

Maybe because some of the XT dont meet the quality requirements ATi wants for the XT-PE.

Kinda why the X800Pro VIVO's exists. They are failed XT-PE's

if the two cards are equal in price? 6800gt.
if the x800pro is lower in price (greater than let's say 50 dollars)? x800pro

Well, everything is relative and if you compare the X800Pro to 6800GT in some benchmarks then it is a 'poor' performer. However, I was talking in general terms about the performance of the X800Pro - there's no way you can call it inherently 'slow'. Benchmarks back me up on this one. :)

lol

which in turn means jack-sh*t to me....

I go by real world performance with games like Doom 3 and Far Cry and I know that stock for stock, a 6800 GT gave me much better performance over the stock X800 Pro.

now for those of us who like to spend boo-koo bucks on video cards just for 3DMark bragging rights, then you're individual results may vary.

but as for myself, I've never been brain washed into worrying about benchmarking numbers nor will I ever be.

real world gaming is what its really about. anything less isnt. ;)

When I said 'benchmarks' I didn't mean '3DMark'.

Believe it or not you can actually benchmark 'real games'.

Besides, I'm not trying to convince anyone that the X800Pro is better than the GT (I own one if you check the sig) I'm just saying..........

The X800Pro is NOT a 'slow' card per se.

Now stop picking on me Oz!! :p
