basically, which card is better in the AGP flavor? also, will they run w/ a 250W PSU or will I need to replace it w/ something like a 480W PSU? Specifically, I am looking at the X800 from ATi and the XFX 6800nu I've seen on Newegg. (saw the X800 on sale from WorstBuy for like $200) What are the pro and cons of each card? Thanks for any input/help.

x800 especially if you're going to be playing HL2 and Source...if not, then it's relatively close and yes you'll need a new psu.

edit: agp 6800nu is probably what I'd go with, they tend to be cheaper.

K thanks...how much wattage are we talking about for a new PSU? and usually for how much?

wattage isn't everything...go check out the PSU forums. Lots of good info there.

fear won't play well on anything from what i hear :p but yah doom3 = 6800 hl2=x800, but really the difference is negligible, if you have em for the same price....flip a coin? although there's the possibility on an agp 6800 to unlock pipes.

A 6800nu may run on a 250 watt if its not a generic and depending what else you have in your computer.

OK so here's what I have to do then:
Get a 6800nu, since its the better card.
Get a new PSU, since compaq obviously skimps on the juice when they build their systems.
Sit down and play HL2, D3, CS:S and anything else for a week straight.

Correct?

hmmm, IIRC dell actually uses high quality power supplies, not sure on compaq, but they might :)

there's the refurbished ATI x800PRO (with 3yr warranty) direct from ATI for 200, might want to take a look

edit:
linky

Like what I see there but I'll go with the 6800 probably, since its cheaper and may run w/o having to upgrade the psu right away.

FEAR ran beautifully on my 9800 Pro, with only 512mb of DDR333 no less.

the 6800nu manual reccomends a 350w PSU. i have a 450w PSU with tons of drives and stuff. the meter on the front of my case never goes over 150w

so its possible that i could run it only w/ a 250W PSU...I feel daring right about now.:D

Also, will a card with GDDR3 kill a card memory-wise that only has DDR? I ask because there's a 6600GT thats got DDR3 and is ten dollars less on newegg.

no not neccesarily, the 6600GT has ddr3, but only a 128 bit memory bus, while the 6800NU has 256bit memory bus. I don't remember exactly, but the NU has more pipes and memory bandwith. The only thing is that the GT has a higher clock speed.

So thereotically the 6800 would do better than the 6600GT? or is it to close to call?

on lower resolutions the 6600gt is better, at higher resolution the memory bandwidth of the 6800 NU takes over

for $10 more i would go with the 6800. you really cant go wrong with this card. ive had a ball overclocking and unlocking mine.
