hey guys...im having trouble deciding which card to get....i play hl2, counter-strike:source, tribes vengeance, world of warcraft, doom 3 and some others....
which card do you think would be better for those games? some are designed off ati card and some for the nvidia line....
my budget will prob be about $600

thanks guys

6800GT > X800 Pro so you'd be better off picking that up, look for a BFG 6800GT OC.

$600 for the whole system?

the GT is better than the X800

But soon the X800xl should be out. And for the money it will be unbeatable. But till it is out the GT is the better card.

You'll be happy with the 6800GT or Ultra, or the X800XT-PE if you can find it. The X800 Pro is a step down IMO, especially with Doom3 on your list.

The 6800 Ultra is nice in the sense that it's the only AGP card of the bunch with dual-DVI. If you have two flat panels then this would be a consideration. Of course, it's best to disable one of them when you play games (especially Doom3).

Assuming AGP, right?

I've got the BFG 6800GT Ultra OC, and I friggin love it. I upgraded from a 9800 pro AIW and its so much faster.

I'm about to make the same decision - and after my weeks of reading and thinking, I am leaning (with the current prices) towards the 6800 GT OC from BFG. I currently have a 9800 Pro. I feel the performance is just barely better than the x800 pro, but with Shader Model 3.0 support, I think as my last AGP card (probably the last. Hell I just bought an engagement ring this will probably be the last computer part I buy in a LONG time) ) it's a wise choice for lasting me another 1.5 -2.0 years. I'm going with BFG for the lifetime warranty. You just can't beat that, and i haven't really read anything negative about the BFG card (or cards.)

Now like I say - this is all based on $$. If the x800 pro dropped to $300 and the 6800 GT was still around $380 - $400, I'd go with the x800 Pro. (the cards are very close in performance) Or if I saw a good Leadtek 6800 GT model (or other popular model) for a lot less than the BFG OC, I'd jump on that too.

Get the x800 XT PE and then overclock it to x850 speeds or leave it alone. Both ways work. They have the x800 XT PE cards at compUSA right now for $500!!!

You could wait for the x800 XL. That should be a great card. However, I wonder- is it PCI-E only or also AGP flavor? If its AGP flavor also, I am going to return my 6800 GT to the store soon and wait until that card comes out. :)

The Radeon X800 XL, as it was announced, will NOT come in AGP flavor, sadly. ATi says that, *maybe* we will see a AGP version but so far, nothing indicates that.

Well, I am personnally about to purchase a Asus V9999 GT 256mb. I think that Asus makes great products, so BFG but I prefer Asus. This is me. The Asus GT 256mb is 380$ at XPCGEAR.com which I find to be the best deal on a real GT. This card also has the exact layout of an Ultra, with its 2 molexes, same capacitors, etc.

You could also get the Ultra which is say, 7-9% faster than a GT but with more than 100$ to pay. If you want the best one that will last you a little longer, get the Ultra. Otherwise, get very fast performance, a little bit slower than a Ultra BUT enjoy the cash spared for something else.

This will come down to one major factor, SOUND LEVEL. The 6800GT and Ultra are annoyingly LOUD compared to the X800 line. Me personally, since I have both, would stay with the X800 since my 6800GT up and died after two months of service. No warning signs, just blank video while using Visio and listening to Winamp.

Thats so not true. If you have a decent case you won't be able to hear a GPU fan unless its one of those TT 9000rpm blowers. Get the GT and if its loud, which its not, put some Dynamat in the case. Unless you got a really bad card like a PNY that got tossed around they shouldn't just die either. 9800 pros are the only card whos fans will just spontaneously fall off I've heard.

You didn't specify *which* X800 you're considering...
The X800Pro is a step down from the 6800GT really. So if you want to go with ATI, the X800XT or X800XT-PE are the ones worth considering (X800XL will be PCI-e only). Of those, the X800XT offers better value for money - at <=$400 it's only slighly slower than the $500+ X800XT-PE.

Agree here. So, if nVidia, get the 6800 GT or ATi, get X800 XT non PE. Again, this will all depends of your personnal taste but this is what appears to be the best performance/price ratio, especially more for the GT.

The X800 XT and X850 are about 100 dollars more though.

The X800XT-*PE* is $100 more. The bog standard X800XT is about the same as a 6800GT, at least where I live it is (Sweeeeden! :p )

Actually my Pro running at 550 / 1125 "feels" faster than the GT did running at 430 / 1150, and a whole lot smoother. The other plus is you don't have to constantly hunt down the latest beta NV drivers to fix something, which ultimately breaks other things.

LOL.. dynamat a case to make up for how loud a GPU fan is. It is night and day if you have owned both a X800 and 6800.

That's still not true. You didn't specify which brand of either card. There are X800s and 6800s with quiet cooling solutions and variants of both brands with loud ones. I don't have dynamat to dampen noise from a loud GPU cooler, but rather to silence a really quiet one(BFG 6800). My 9800 pro's stock cooler is the only one I can hear over the other fans and its still pretty quiet. I use all Vantec Stealth or Coolermaster Silence fans and my PSUs come with extremely quiet fans as well. All I was getting at is that the location of the GPU doesn't allow for much of the noise it produces to escape because of the reflection and absorption that goes on inside a well sileneced case. You should look more at the graphical ability, reliability and cooling effectiveness in this case...

maybe your 6800's fan was unbalenced? when the fan was on it, i couldnt here shit from it.

Well.. I would say screw agp, and get a pci-express mobo.. upgrade path++
I doubt we'll be saying an nvidia refresh with agp either.

well i was going to get a new video card for a while..maybe a year or so...then just redo my whole system....but keep the water cooling....if need be...i have a GPU water block that i can add if the noise is that bad....ive used nvidia cards my whole gaming career(if you would call it that) and have heard bad stuff about ATI drivers causing conflicts with games etc etc...

Ati drivers are fine, I've used ati since jan 11th of 2002, only a few game bugs that prevented me from playing games- racer, and richard burns rally.
There's alot of bullshit about ati drivers, based off their old products.
Ati drivers>nvidia imo, once a month you get a WHQL driver, and you didn't have to wait forever for nvidia to fix shimmering, and not sure if they fixed the stuttering issue yet(shows up in EQ2 really well, 99% of GF6 owners have bug I believe).
But if you insist on riding old tech, get a 6800GT, just dont complain next time you upgrade and have to get a whole new mobo+cpu to upgrade your videocard.

The sound is worth the trade for the performance offered. Also the Artic Cooling Silencer products will take care of alot of the "sound" issues.

Just toss a TEC on your vid card like I did...sound problem solved. ;)

I would search around for a used X800XT/PE. I have seen them in the forsale forums here and at Anand.

So you mean you have to actually buy something to make up for the noisy cooler that comes stock?
A huh.
Depends what games you play, the X800 pro does just as good as a 6800GT in source games, and I dont know of any games using the doom 3 engine that will be out before the next gen stuff is out.

Overall the Pro is not a good choice of video card over the GT. Not that the Pro is bad by any means, but I couldn't see how anyone could recommend it over the GT

The X800 only gets similar frame rates in certain games. Its last generation architecture pushed to the max. I'd agree that ATI drivers are a pain in the ass compared to Nvidia's though. They don't have as many releases which is nice, but the Catalyst Control Center is a waste of time, and you can't even get true Trilinear filtering. None of the Nvidia cards have ever been noisy for me but I do have well silenced cases. You're hard pressed to tell if they're on or off even under load so I don't even see where this noise issue is coming from, unless you've got mega cheapo aluminum foil case pannels.

Why would someone get rid of one already? They're just now becoming available...

I have had one for over 5 months. Picked up my 2nd one in the forsale forum a while back, guy only wanted 450 for it. They are around.

agreed, get the 6800gt and overclock to ultra speeds, solid card and will even get better as more and more games come out with SM3.0. Also, there are a LOT of developers in bed with nvidia, what's the chances of them favoring the one's footing some of the bill ;)

Proof or shens.
And what about the X800XL? It's faster than a 6800GT in 99% of games, is that a bad card because it uses extended technoligy from the R300?
You don't seem to understand that building on one card is not a bad thing.
The certain types of gain.. are D3D, which is a large portion overall of games.
My ati drivers are fine ty, and you can't even tell ati is using brilinear filterting, so why would they offer it?
It's !!!!!!s like you that make me wonder if I should get a 6800 oc, because I don't wanne be associated with the likes of you.

lately every benchmark i've seen has been showing the x800pro to be ahead of the 6800gt in most all games except for doom 3. AND the pro's seem to OC pretty damn well. i've been able to get my core to 570 without artifacts and the stock heatsink, (ram only to 520 but i need some heatsinks for it)

With the likes of me? What makes you think the people who run Nvidia or I care anything about the likes of you? You're not famous or important enough for me to associate with, so who cares what you want. You don't know who I am or anything about me other than I don't like ATI drivers. :D Don't be such a drama queen. You can tell the difference between bilinear and trilinear mip maps if you can tell thedifference between 70 and 75 fps.

ATI's got great frame rates now but they sacrafice the IQ to do it. You can see it in the tests clearly that the areas of forced low Q are huge in ATI and far different from the reference, where as Nvidia's patterns come out very near reference.

Where can one find an x800 XT for less than $400? I would be very interested in that.
