x800 pro wierd problem

Just got the x800 pro, specs:

2.4c
1gb pc3200 kingston value
abit is7-e
audigy 2
thermaltake purepower 420w PS
40gb WD 8mb cache

Well, the monitor will randomly go black. Shortly after, about a second, the windows reappear, but I have to min/max them to reappear without the black being there. Same with the taskbar, have to hide, then bring it back up to look right with no black spots it.

Now, I don't want to fry this new card, but powersupply is lingering in my head. Any ideas?

Cheap 17" CRT Magview - max refresh is a crappy 60hz on the max res 1280x1024 (32 bpp). Could that be my prob?

that happens to me as well, but it only happens when i go so certain websites
 
Do you have the most up-to-date BIOS possible? If not, try flashing to the latest version.
 
I just updated to the beta 4.7 last night, and shortly after, it did it again. So...don't think it's the cats. I updated my bios about well........3-4 months ago? I'll go see if there is a newer revision out and update tonight. Hopefully that can fix my problem.

Nothing is wrong with your video card. I have the same problem sometimes with my 9800 XT. Happens usually while browsing. I just open up any minimised application, and when I minimise it again, the problem is gone. Must be a driver issue. I don't worry about it at all.
 
Maybe there are issues with old drivers that didn't completely uninstall? (Assuming you uninstalled the old drivers before you put the new card in)
What card did you upgrade from?
 
I came from the 9700 pro (didn't do it with that card) but I did use Driver Cleaner from Driverheaven.com to clean the old drivers, cabs, etc. before installing the x800. Hopefully, ATI will fix the issue if it is a driver issue, I'm still going to see if my mobo has an update take care of that as well.
 
Updated the motherboard, NO GOOD. I'm getting kind of worried now, just now it did it 3 times in less than 10 minutes. Something is wrong here, something is about to go out, and it better not take my video card with it.

I think I'll just format the whole darn hard drive again. That seems to fix it all, eh?
 
Have you checked your temps? Perhaps your hardware is getting hot and causing artifacts/gfx tearing.

take your side panel off and see if it still happens.
 
OVERDRIVE says I'm at 44C. Plus I have (4) 80mm flowing the case (xaser II Thermaltake). I don't think it would be cause it's hot. I don't get any artifacts during games or anything.
 
Good news. I can now reciprocate the problem.

I do online banking, and it seems that when I enter my bank info, it logs into the secure server, then boom, that's when it does it. I closed IE then tried again, and just like expected...did it again.

I guess it's when logging into a secure server or environment, there's some kind of "mini-check" that the website does with the browser that's making it kick into a full black mode....maybe it's just IE.

Ahah, does it with Firefox as well. It can't be the browser. Must be some kind of security on my system...maybe policy settings and such? Ah, well, nothing a format can't handle.

To those guys above having the same problem, check and see if it does it when logging into a "secure" environment. Perhaps it's some sort of system setting that's making the screen turn black.

It would be nice if we could figure out how to fix this; I can add it to my repitoire of windows bug fixes. I'll keep messing with it to see if I can figure it out.
 
Yes it does it when I enter my bank's safe environment. But why does it worry you so much? I suppose you don't go to your bank's site several times a day... even then, just bring up any other application and it's OK.
 
I actually do go to my bank several times a day, but that's beyond the point. If it happened to you at the frequency it happens to me, you would get annoyed. Please don't try to contribute....well, if your not going to.
 
It's caused by the Java runtime loaded when we open our banking sites. I just updated to the latest runtime version, and got the same black squares when the installation was completed. This was without IE running.

Is that a useful enough contribution, Sir? :rolleyes:
 
Getting the SAME exact problem. It's most certainly something to do with the Java 2 runtime platform. I'm running Cat 4.7, and the latest version of Java from Sun. The screen does this everytime a java window appears or java is loaded. Strangest thing is that the loading of a java based application like the bittorrent client Azeureus doesn't cause the problem...

Go figure, any ideas other than trying to down grade to Cat 4.6. BTW i did a complete format/reinstall at the beginning of July, so its not a screwed up Windows install (hopefully!).
