I working on putting together on a new comp and I'm stuck between the x800 pro and 6800 GT. Any suggestions?

I don't plan to do any overclocking.

Also what manufacturers would you recommend? For the x800 Pro i was looking at ATI or Sapphire. And for the 6800 GT I was looking at eVGA, XFX or BFG.

Thanks in advance!

Get an MSI 6800GT. The MSI board has gotten a lot of compliments as well as its cooling solution. The x800 is overpriced and and old technology compared to the 6800GT. Its got 4 less pixel pipelines and doesn't support Pixel Shader 3.0, which games are now beginning to use.

MSI 6800 GT eh? Doesn't the Gainward Golden Sample also use custom cooling and overclocks really good?

What's your opinion of eVGA? Newegg is advertising the eVGA 6800GT GDDR3 for $390 w/ Doom3. Likewise NE is advertising the MSI 6800GT GDDR3 for $418.50 no Doom3.

Matters what sound level you are willing at accept. If you want good performance with almost no noise, go with the X800Pro. If you want better (slightly) performance with alot of noise, got with the 6800GT.

Noise?
The GT is quite quiet, and if it is too loud, get an arctic cooler nv5.
also, why not get an sli mobo, and one gt.
then in a years time, get another, and have huge performance increase, for much less money ($250 by then (maybe less))

I know MSI and BFG are good quality brands with good support. Asus' quality is supposedly the best but their 6 series was poorly priced because it was away from refernce spec.

I have a eVGA 6800GT. It's not noisy at all, and I overclocked it to more than an ULTRA and it's stable even with stock cooling. Doom3 was an added bonus.

The X800pro is older technolgy, only 12 pipes vs 16, 2.0 shader support vs 3.0. The GT is simply just an underclocked ULTRA, no hardware differences. The x800pro differs from the x800xt in hardware.

simple fact is unless you can oc the x800 then the 6800gt is the best decision to make.

Yea, there are hardware differences. The Ultra uses the 1.6 NS memory, doesn't it? And the GT uses the 2.0 NS memory.

I would go for the ATi board instead of 6800, just something about 6800 image quality I'm not liking, maybe it's just me.

And the 6800U and GT do differ, in their GDDR3 RAM, cooling(stock), but I'm not 100% sure about the different GDDR's/

The 3d image quality of the 6800 is closer to reference with optimizations off than the catalyst based optimized trickery which is impossible to disable for the most part. 2d image quality on ATI cards is better though. So if you like the old side scrollers go for the ATI ;)

you still cant get an x800 pro that comes with 16 pipelines and ps 3.0

16 pipes on a PRO? Sure you can, it's called a VIVO. No BS 3.0 though. :p

I don't think better 2D quality justifies buying a $400 card.?
