X800 Crossfire

I haven't really seen any posts on X800 Crossfire setups, though I suppose not too many people really cared for it. I have an ASUS A8R-MVP and a PCIE X800XL and noticed that Newegg had the X800 256MB Crossfire Edition for $189 (refurbs for $150) so I thought I might try it out just for fun (waiting for next gen of cards and AMD chipset to really upgrade). I haven't really benchmarked it too thoroughly yet, but my first run of 3DMark05 was ~9500. With 1 card, I got 1786 on 3DMark06, and in Crossfire I got 3129. Too bad it doesn't have PS 3.0 since an N/A really brings down the score. This is with an Opteron 144 @ 2.79 GHz and 2GB RAM @ 200 MHz 2-3-3-6-1T. Running BF2 with everything on high with 4X AA @ 1920*1200 with 1 card was averaging ~20-30 FPS according to FRAPS. In Crossfire I was averaging ~40-50 FPS, though it was on a smaller map with only ~ 10 people playing. I haven't actually read of anyone using 1920*1200 with the X800 or X850 series in Crossfire, so I wanted to try it out myself and it seems to work. I will be playing with it some more on other games like FEAR, CS:S, HL2: Lost Coast when I have more time, hopefully this weekend.
 
X800 CF was a downer and now their is no reason with X1800XLs at the 269$ price point.
I am glad that it works above 1600 x 1200 but I would expect a performance hit due to the frame compositing chip being too slow.

any chance you could post some numbers using 1280x1024 and max AA/AF (4x/16x or 6x/16x) with FEAR, CS:S and HL2 (please)? my LCD's only do 1280x1024 so i really am not concerned with higher res/refresh. i was about to post this morning about doing a Crossfire X850 XT setup since i already have an X850 XT but you beat me to it even, though, you've got an X800 XL setup :D.

So... do you like it overall? The quality? I have heard there was a problem on x800xfire setup not going above 60hz on any resolution?

that's correct with the x8xx Crossfire setup, however, such would only be an issue on CRT's.

Does anyone know if I could use the x800 mastercard with my unlocked x800GTO2 or would I have to get an x850 mastercard? I have the gto2 sitting here unused and my 975 board, so I figured I'd like to try it out just to see the up/downsides to crossfire.

haven't a clue. i'd assume it possible but that would be a risky venture potentially leaving you with a card laying around..

I had a chance to play with the setup a bit more. I had some stability problems with my Opteron 144 @ 2.79 GHz with both X800's in the machine (Only using a Fortron 400 Watt ATX 2.0 PSU, I have an X-Finity 500 Watt coming in a few days) so I lowered it to 2.7 GHz. It also has 2 GB Memory running @ 192 MHz 2-3-3-6-1T on an ASUS A8R-MVP. All games were run @ 1280*1024 with all settings on high (No SS on FEAR, COD2 textures were set to high, not extreme) and 4x AA and 16x Aniso (COD2 just had Aniso). Using FRAPS,

COD2 non-Crossfire 15-20 FPS
COD2 Crossfire 35-40 FPS

When playing through the first 3-4 levels.

BF2 non-Crossfire 40-50+ FPS
BF2 Crossfire 50-60+ FPS

When playin a quick single player game.

Using in game performance tests,

Half Life 2: Lost Coast non-Crossfire 33.52 FPS
Half Life 2: Lost Coast Crossfire 57.54

That was with HDR on.

FEAR non-Crossfire 15, 29, 64 44%<25, 38% for 25-40, 18%>40
FEAR Crossfire 17, 39, 132 25%<25, 38% for 25-40, 37%>40

I think there was a pretty nice improvement going to Crossfire, at least for the money. I wanted to try Crossfire, but didn't want to go with the X1900XT since I will be getting whatever the next gen card is that has DX10 hardware support.

i also think that a nice improvement considering the overall cost of the hardware versus an X1800 XT/X1900 XT currently. thank you very much for furnishing this information --> now i need to hunt down a Crossfire Edition X850 XT and get ready for the RD580 DFI board :D.

Ah! Where did all the x800 Crossfire edition cards go? The newegg link dosen't work, search turns up nothing there or at chiefvalue. Suggestions to find one?
 
I wonder if the X1800XL cards will work in Crossfire without a master card with the new ATI chipset... Inquiring minds want to know!
