X800 and S-Video input

I have an analog Sony Video recorder that is about 2-3years old, and it has a S-video out jack. Im using the S-video cable that came with my MSI X800 card. I was wondering what drivers/software do i need so that my computer will recognize my Sony Video Recorder?

You need the ATI WDM drivers which come with the full Catalyst package and should be installed automatically along with them. Check your Device Manager under 'Sound and Game devices' and see if the ATI video capture device is listed, that will confirm that you have the WDM driver installed.

If you don't have the WDM driver installed you can download it seperately from www.ati.com.

Then you just need some kind of video capture program, Windows XP comes with "Windows Movie Maker" which has some nice basic features for editing video and adding titles and transition effects.

I usually just install the ATI Video display Drivers and nothing else, so ill get the WDM installed right away.

Isn't that S-Video port on his X800 an output only?
if it is, then there should be no way to capture into the computer with it.

Yeah you can download it seperately too, just go to download the catalyst drivers and scroll down to the section labeled 'For Dialup Users' and there should be a seperate WDM only package there. :)

Well I just assumed that it was a VIVO card... :eek:

Original poster: If your card isn't a VIVO card and didn't come with the appropriate dongle, you can't just connect an S-Video cable from the camcorder to the back of the card and expect it to work. :eek:
 
You guys scared me for a second. Yes, I read in my manual that it has s-video in. And it came with the s-video wire connector.

Well you need some kind of video editing program for your PC. Windows XP has Windows Movie Maker which will let you do basic import and editing.

For windows movie maker you'll basically want to connect your camcorder, power it on in play mode, go to File -> Capture Video... and follow the directions. Once you've started capturing video press 'Play' on the camcorder and then let it play until it has captured what you want.

Once you've captured the video you can edit it and add titles/effects within Windows Movie Maker.


Oh and remember that if you want the audio from your recording you will need to run it from the camcorder's audio output to the line-in on your sound card.

I think there is something wrong with my WDM drivers. The camera is not being recognized at all. I used DriverCleaner to clear my old drivers out, then installed new one's several times. No Luck.

I'm not really sure what to do, maybe my s-video in, isn't really s-video in. It does say it's s-video in, in my manual. I have an adapter that makes it s-video out... so it's got to be s-video in. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR just work, lol.
 
When you go to capture video are you selecting 'S-Video' and not 'Composite'?

I am not in front of my VIVO machine right now (actually it's apart waiting on a new PSU and video card) but when you click 'Capture Video' a dialogue should come up where you can select S-Video or Composite, as well as what audio device to record audio from.
