Heyya all,

Been reading around the web about the deatils on X79 & it looks pretty tasty. The things that caught my fancy are:

256-bit/4ch. mem controller, on-die(lower latency)
PCI-E 2.0 HUB that supports full 2x PCI-E x16 graphics & a dedicated PCI-E x4 link for the SATA 6G ports, all on-die, instead of using a traditional NB.

What typo of memory support will the new X79 paltform have? I don't remember reading about that detail. I'm assuming DDR3 1333, probably 1600 by OC. :D

The big problem is availability if we believe the new release schedule (Jan 2012).

DDR3 quad channel, the spec speed is not known yet, probably 1600. And yeah, PCI-e 3.0 which is huge for bandwidth (3.0 x8 = 2.0/2.1 x16, everything is doubled).

has anyone seen anything that looks pretty 100% that says x79 will have pcie 3.0? The reason I ask is that some sites seem to still say that the main pcie slots will be pcie 2.0 and that even thought the x79 boards from computex had pcie 3.0 plastered on them it only refers to some small bridge on the mobo, and not the main slots for vga.

Most mobos from Computex had been spec'd with having pci-e 3.0 and now there are some z68 mobos being spec'd with pci-e 3.0 as well.

Z68 boards with pci-e 3.0 :
MSI announced the Z68A-GD80 (G3) which has three PCI Express 3.0 x16 slots.
ASRock revealed the Fatal1ty Z68 Professional Gen3 which uses the PLX PEX8608 bridge chip to deliver two PCIe 3.0 x16 slots.

The question is, what will PCI-E 3.0 actually bring us?

Double the bandwidth of PCI-e 2.0/2.1.

PCI-e 3.0 x8 = PCI-e 2.0 x16 and so forth. Not needed for current graphics cards (unless you have some 3-4 card setup maybe you can use a cheaper motherboard).

no need to spend thousands of dollars for 2% performance increase.

Per lane (each direction):
v1.x: 250 MB/s (2 Gbit/s)
v2.x: 500 MB/s (4 Gbit/s)
v3.0: 1 GB/s (8 Gbit/s)
16 lane slot (each direction):
v1.x: 4 GB/s (32 Gbit/s)
v2.x: 8 GB/s (64 Gbit/s)
v3.0: 16 GB/s (128 Gbit/s)

That's pretty much the point i was making, what will we use all that bandwidth for exactly?

Video cards that use PCI-E 3.0 will take advantage of it. SATA controllers and many other on board devices use the PCI-E bus and lanes as well.

this should be good, low end sata controllers with 1 or 2 pci-e 3.0 lanes will be good

Do the words "plan ahead" mean anything to you? As grambo said, it's not for current graphics cards, it's for the next gen cards that will use the extra bandwidth.....

Speak for yourself! :p My money is ready!

So am I. All of my builds have mostly hovered somewhere in-between the budget and mainstream price brackets, and I always kept them for around 4-5 years. This time around I've steeled myself (and my wallet) for a high-end build. :D

The big problem is availability if we believe the new release schedule (Jan 2012).

So its definitive that the X79 platform has been pushed back to Jan. 2012? (I apologize if this has been asked to death already. If it has, just linking to any relevant thread/webpage is sufficient)

They do, but i can see it being WAY off yet..
