I'm building a new a64 system and will need a pci-e video card to replace my 9700pro in my current system. What would be the better choice? For around $180 at Newegg I can get either a 256meg x700pro

or a 128meg 6600GT

I see a lot of 6600gt recomendations here, what would the advantage be of a 6600GT over the x700pro, especially with the ati card having 256megs of ram? I do play a lot of HL2/CS:S and understand the Ati card has an advantage there but if I DIDN"T play HL2 much, what would you guys recommend and why?

Check which performs better in the games you wish to play and buy that one. The extra ram would probably help you if you tend to use a higher resolution and aa/af. If you are content with 1024by768 or so then the extra ram is erroneous to your decision. The 6600gt has overall a faster gpu and better performance in gpu intensive games (most). The X700 pro is generally a slower card but can be OCed to keep up with the 6600gt if you get a nice cool running card you might even eclipse the 6600gt. But then there's the option of OCing the 6600gt... Haha. I say get the 6600gt for overall performance.

Have fun.

the 6600gt is faster and supports pixel shader 3.0 which ati can not do. plus you can SLI it.
and it has a few other things like a few extra shadowing techniquies and such.

the extra ram would help if you run w/ high AA and AF.

id go w/ the 6600gt though.. just my opinion.

I'd get the 6600GT, the X700 is just way too noisy ... my friend has one and dude the noise is insane!

Go for 6600GT homie. I was just reading the same thread like this in Vietnamese @ vozforums.com :D

Do what I did get the cheapest decent pci e card you can.Your prolly waiting for ati's and nvidias next generation cards right?

I got a refurbed x700pro from newegg for 140.It came with everything like a new one would and runs fine.

I Got a decent overclocking one also.
460 core
520 mem

23.6k in 01

If your not planing on upgrading anytime soon get an 800xl for like 280.

Umm, guys, i didn't read the whole thread so don't flame here, but check the Tom's Hardware VPU Guides...

The X700 256MB isn't on the list, but it's faster, older brothers, the Pro and XT are given a very solid beating by the 6600GT...

I think we need a permanent sticky for this. This seems to be the most common question in the last couple of months.

The part I bolded is completely false.

I've gone through both the X700Pro as well as the 6600GT (I wasn't satisfied with the BBA X700Pro... it sounded like a helicopter landing pad), and the 6600GT is the clear winner.
In every game I played, the 6600GT performed better. In HL2, it wasn't by much (only about 8FPS in tests I ran), but in other games it blew away the X700Pro... especially OpenGL games (KOTOR, Doom 3.. which ran a surprisingly steady 60FPS).
It was a great card.
Um.. I say was, because I fried it.
I currently have an X800XL, and if you have an extra 100 to blow, pick it up on Newegg ($269).
