X700 Pro Benchmark question..

Just wondering but does anyone know why Tom's hardware benchmarks the ATI X700 Pro at around 2900 on 3DMark05? I have a very similar system with an ATI X700 Pro and consistantly get over 3100+ on it.

My system is a Dell 8400:

P4 3.2ghz w/HT (800mhz)
512mb Ram
WD 250GB RE (8mb, 7200rpm)
ATI X700 Pro

Anyone else have a similar experience with their X700 Pro? Or does my machine have magical elves inside which work overtime?

Also.. my card is on stock freqs.. I don't overclock.
 
I also get 3100-3300 (can't remember the number) but my X700 Pro is the Sapphire Toxic Edition with an Artic Cooler Silencer stock and uses APE to "warranty overclock" to 475/1000. It could be Tom did not use the latest drivers, just enjoy the added performance and don't worry about the slight advantage. :)

Hmm.. what is this APE that you can overclock without voiding the warranty? My main reasons for not overclocking is because I don't want to void the warranty or ruin my card.

Also.. how loud is the Artic Silencer? I was debating adding one if it made a big difference in the noise which comes from my current fan. It sounds alot like a CD-Rom whirling now when I play 3D games.
 
APE stands for Automatic Performance Enhancement (or something along those lines) The Sapphire X700 Pro Toxic Edition is not really "overclocked" as it uses a Radeon X700 XT chip and the memory is 1000MHz anyway. Did a little research and there was supposed to be a X700XT but ATI did not like the percentage of chips that met that standard so never came out with it. The XT was supposed to be 475/1050 and the Pro 425/860 so Sapphire just did a work around by spec'ing better GDR for their Toxic Edition.

If you are worried about the warranty, it would probably not be a good idea to remove the stock heat sink combo. If you don't care, putting an Artic Cooling Silencer on the card will make it run much, much cooler, helps ventilate your case better and is silent. Yep, I am talking no noise coming from the Sapphire and that is the reason I bought it, the silent yet cooling running of that card. It sits in a home theater PC so silence is golden. The overclocker in me likes the cool running and maybe in a year... I would like to overclock it some more now but the card is used for "MCE 2005 compliance" and my wife would kill me.

Be careful overclocking, I blew the memory on a 9600 Pro so use ATI tools that test for errors. Once the automatic overclocking figures out the max overclock, back off the settings 5% and you should be safe. Check your brand and model of your card and sniff around the forums to see how well it overclocks if you want to give it a shot.

By the way, the Sapphire APE is a driver they include with the video card and probably does not work with other brands. :(
 
My guess is drivers depending on when the benchmark was taken. 3100 vs. 2900 isn't too much of a descrepancy. less than 10%.
