X6800 clockspeed flucuates massively?

Uhh, i kind of just noticed this happening under CPUZ, but it will pretty frequently change the multiplier from 6 to 11 on its own, even with 3 games running and lots of apps at the same time.

dropping from 3ghz to 1.6ghz

normal?
 
You should sell it to some sucker on eBay for $150 to $200 and replace it with an E8400 or similar.
Just make sure you include the words "Extreme!" and "3 GHz" in the auction listing.

By the way, that downclocking is normal.

It's Intel's SpeedStep at work, reducing your processor's clock to decrease power consumption and heat with lighter workloads. This is totally normal.

OTOH, I still see jerks on eBay selling P4 EE's for almost $700 so by that logic you should be able to sell your X6800 for four times that. WTF?

It does not matter how many apps are running but if the CPU is under load, if the apps are open but the CPU is not under a load then it will use speedstep and drop the multi to lower the speed (and power consumption) of the chip. I have about 20 FF windows open and 2 HD movies open as well as photoshop open, but because I am not doing anything with them my CPU is not under load and is down clocked to 2700MHz with a 6x multi, from the normal 8.5x multi at 3800MHz.
