X60 now?

Hey all, the X60 is on sale in Canada and I'm thinking about picking one up for business use. I travel quite frequently, so the light weight is a major factor. However, I haven't really been in the loop much, so I thought I'd ask for some opinions. I'd like to run Windows Vista once it's out, so I'm kind of worried about its components being dated and insufficient. I wish it had Core 2 Duo (although this is probably why it's on sale), more RAM (although I can upgrade this fairly easily), and a better video card (I play DotA and CS once in a blue moon).

It's especially tough when I look at what Dell and other companies are offering for about the same amount of money (Core 2 Duo, ATI/NVIDIA card, integrated optical drive, etc.). But I keep hearing business users swearing by their Thinkpads.

Can anyone offer up any advice and/or opinions? Should I keep waiting and/or look at some other options? Or should I jump on the sale?
 
One thing that I might see as a hassle is the fact that you have to have the optional dock in order to have an optical drive.
 
X60 is an ultraportable, so expect it to perform like one. You will need a docking station or the media slice for a cd/dvd rw and when you add them the price goes up considerably. Upgrading the memory is a little different then on the prior versions, you have to take the keyboard off to get to it, kind of a pain, but then again, you have to on the Z61 and T60 series also because of the new drain holes. Core 2 Duo versions will be out in October if you're willing to wait.

Also, take a look at the Dell D420...it's a good product as well in that segment.
 
I was planning on picking up the USB Multiburner, so the optical drive won't be much of an issue. Where did you hear the Core 2 Duos are coming out in October? I've heard a number of different stories with regard to this. The most popular one being Core 2 Duo for the tablet version, but that's all for this year.
 
Core 2 Duo is coming to the entire thinkpad line in Oct., that info comes straight from a reliable source.
 
My x60 rocks :D
Using it to make this very post (from my bio class :p)

Not sure how it would game (I use linux on it). However you will thank yourself if you take it with you a lot,
 
And the x60s (the slightly smaller version of the x60) allows you to upgrade memory just by unscrewing a panel in the back :cool:

Like Darakian said, if you take your laptop with you a lot, you will thank yourself every day that you bought an ultraportable.
 
I should also say that the battery life is amazing! I take mine to school everyday and the thing lasts a good 5-7 hours depending on system usage. Also to be specific I have the x60s :p
 
I just got a t60p and I just have to say the thinkpad line is just amazing, build quality is just top notch. yes the dell and other models may be cheaper, but with everything else, you get what you pay for. if you carry it with you on a daily basis and don't mind the lack of built in optical drive. get the x60/s your back and shoulders will thank you.
