I was thinking of getting one of the new 6 cores from AMD. I have just a C2D now and since my board wont support the newer quad cores I decided to check out these. My question is #1 can I get a board that will run DDR2 and an X6?
#2 Would I see a major performance difference between that and DDR3.

The reason I ask is that I don't want to spend a ton of money if I don't have to. I use my current machine for everything but I do game a lot. I have 8GB of DDR2 and would love to be able to use it if I can. This would save me money. I could essentially buy the new chip and a new mobo.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes and no.

A good mobo with x6 compatibility and ddr2 is the Gigabyte MA770-UD3 (there might be a T in there, not sure on the exact model).

Is there a major difference in performance between ddr2 and ddr3? No. It is noticeable in benchmarks, but not so much in real world applications. There is a difference, but it's not that big.

Edit: You might run into the problem of getting the mobo without the right bios to support the x6. So you'd have to find a friend or something with an AM2 compatible processor so that you can boot it up and flash the bios to the newest one.

Thanks for the reply, I want more cpu power and would like to build a completely new PC but I just don't have the money to get more RAMM at this point. DDR3 for 8GB is expensive atm.
 
I have GIGABYTE GA-MA770-UD3 and I have the 1090T, I just got the board from Newegg and it was a REV 2.1 board, the 2.0 also supports the X6's, they both need to update the bios to support it but they have had the bios out for weeks.
I'm pretty happy with my setup and agree with seiferoth10 that there isn't all that much difference using DDR2 vs DDR3 in terms of gaming.
I say go for it !

That's why they have Black Editions. No need to even mess with HTT base clock. Just choose your multipliers for the CPU/NB/HTT and enjoy. AMD has really spoiled me with this feature on a sub $999 chip.
 
if you just want more horsepower, you are probably better of (money/performance wise) getting a socket 775 quad core for your old mobo, perhaps a used Q6600 or something

that will cost a lot less then mobo/6-core

dont get me wrong, i'd get a hexa-core too, but if money is a real problem...

but even saying that its a nvidia 680i motherboard.. thats reason enough to get away from it..

its not worth extra $100 for 200 GHz more on 1090t over 1055t. Most people with 1055t will get to 3.8 to 4.1 GHz.

its not that hard.

your right, its not too hard.....but what if the person does not want to mess with HTT or FSB settings ? the multi being unlocked may be worth the extra $100 for people
 
I have the 1055t and am very satisfied with it's performance. I have not pushed it as the cooling is stock at the moment. I am still doing my research on what cooling option will be best for my situation. I think you will like this chip alot if you use multi threaded apps. Of course, the 1090t is only $100 more so you won't go broke stepping up.
 
One thing to remember is if you don't mind selling your stuff, you could get almost dollar for dollar on that ddr2 of yours so the ram would be very close to a wash. At least you wouldn't be as limited on MB choices.

Running stock cooling in a Three Hundred case with 2xTri-Cool intake fans. All case fans on low and I am able to hit 3.5 Ghz stable with no voltage bump.

Hmm I did not know that. I was thinking the multicore chip will get utilized alot more in the future. Thanks for all the advice.

i interpreted that as it wont support the NEWER quad cores. I dont really know that much about the 680i chipset, but it has to be VERY old to not support a Q6600, he does have a e6750 after all

doesn't mean the chipset wont, its that either the board doesn't have the power to support it(much like some AM2+ boards cannot support an x6 because it cannot give it enough power), or the fact that the mobo manufacturer probably has not updated the board to support C2Q's
