Just got my Rampage III Extreme, a friend sent me thats brand new and should have the X5670 in about a week... I came across a discussion on another board talking about making adjustments in the bios for it to work properly.. is this true?

So even if I wanted to run stock and just drop it in, I will need to mess with bios and adjust voltage settings for it to work? Just like to know what I'm getting into here. :confused:
 
You'll have no issue with it and need to adjust anything in the BIOS to make the chip work. The only caveat here is ensuring that the board has a current enough BIOS to support the chip.

The X5670 should overclock very well for you if you are inclined to try it.
 
just a quick glance at asus downloads and it looks like you would need at least 1401 bios or later. If its got the bios it came out with you will need to flash it with older cpu first, otherwise it's not going to post
 
@lutjens In another thread of mine someone mentioned they would help me with OCing... what do you think would be the Max stable OC on air be? Using a Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme with 2 fans mounted on it.

@primaetime I better start crossing my fingers now or I will be up the creek without a paddle. Lets just say for the sake of it, that the original BIOS is in it, any idea what CPU was supported? I can then start looking around ahead of time for a used CPU that for sure will post.

Just plain core i7 920 is all thats needed......i sent mine (sold) to another forum member who needed it for that exact reason. i let him have it for 30 bucks shipped since it was just collecting dust. I guess worse case you by one as cheap as possible and resell it when done for a slight loss.

Max stable 24/7 overclock for that cpu is 4.2-4.6 in 99% of cases and it really is as simple as that. Now regarding the bios, i find it unlikely it would have original bios since there's no such thing as brand new 1366 board unless somebody buried it in a time capsule all this time, but i guess it does happen from time to time.

I originally sent my cpu out as a loan and was going to refund the money when he sent it back, but he asked if he could purchase it instead. You might find someone else in same situation
 
Thanks for the info primetime. Not sure how long its been sitting the womans shelf. What happened is that her original board got damage and she RMA'ed it, but didn't want to sit around for 3 weeks without a comp, so she just went ahead and upgraded her system and then stuck this on her shelf when ASUS sent her the new one. They should mark on board what bios version is in it by default.

I left my wife's X58A-UD5 Rev 1 with the original launch BIOS for years and only updated it a month or two ago in anticipation of the X5675's arrival.

YMMV (as every chip is different), but considering the Xeons' superior binning, 4.0GHz should be within the realm of possibility on air for that cooling (assuming good ambient temps and excellent case ventilation).
