x5350 Bsel Mod fail?

I got a pair of x5350's (2.66 @ 1066) and I am trying to do the BSEL mod illustrated here:

to bring them up to 3.33 @ 1333... when I do it the machine (PowerEdge 2900) gives me an "E1410 CPU1 IERR E1410 CPU2 IERR"

if I put them in one at a time I just get "E1410 CPU1 IERR"

anyone have any advice or suggestions?

the processors work as I tried them before doing the tape mod (and updated the 2900 to the latest bios with the original 5160 that was in it)
 
It is quite possible the OC might be too high. I have a pair of 2.33GHz X5340 ES chips and they cannot run stable @3.0GHz when I applied the BSEL mod. Fortunately, they can be multiplier adjusted being ES chips, so I dropped the multiplier one step (from 9 to 8) for 2.66Ghz. Then, I OCed the FSB further through software in Windows. I attained a stable frequency of ~2.95GHz with the lower multiplier and software OC, but with a much higher FSB.

Your processors could very well be limited to frequencies below 3.33GHz, or perhaps the motherboard isn't up to the task. I highly doubt it's the motherboard after going through my ordeal with the X5340s. I can't say for sure because my experience is limited only to Supermicro and Tyan products. If you cannot adjust the CPU multiplier downwards, there's really not much else you can do except replace the motherboard (not worthwhile unless you find one dirt cheap).

You can still run -bigadv @2.66GHz, if that's your ultimate goal. You will see a TPF of around 41-42 min, but this is as dependent on other factors like Linux distro and memory as clock speed. If your motherboard support software FSB OCing, do this: remove the tape mod, download Systool, got to 'CPU Overclocking' and select the first clock generator in the drop down list (ICS93S401). Many S771 motherboards use that clock generator chip and if yours does, you'll be able to adjust the FSB through Windows. Thus, at a stock FSB of 1066MHz, you can still reach and exceed 3.0GHz through software.

This works only on some motherboards and ONLY in Win XP, so you'll need to dual boot if your motherboard is actually supported and you want to stick with Vista or Win 7. If your motherboard is not supported, I don't know how else to adjust the FSB unless another software supports the clock generator on your board.

It's unfortunate, but it's quite likely. These chips and my X5340s are actually more than capable of running over 3.0GHz, but they need (like all Core2) a voltage increase to help them out. No workstation or server motherboard has that capability, hence the limitation. With Skulltrail and the Asus Z7S WS board, it would be much easier.
 
I remember the good ol days when we used to have to solder jumper blocks with wires to get multiplier and voltage adjustment. GOD i hated that.. All to get a few hundred more mhz out a Socket-A Duron 800. WTF was i thinking? lol.

Next time you are in Cincinnati, I have an old Celery 300 system you can have that is overclocked to 450mhz. I really want to get rid of it to free up space in the room my folding rig is in, but just can't bear to throw computer stuff away. Still got my old 486/66/DX2 as well with a whopping 20mb of system ram(originally came with only 4mb).
