x4 good for phys-x?

I see some boards with x16 and x4. If I use the x4 for phys-x, is it going to lower the x16 slot? (for example, when 2 cards are sli-d they both become x8)

Now come to think of it, I think it was an AMD motherboard. is phys-x still possible? If not, what on earth would I use the x4 slot for?
 
I don't see why it would lower the X16, yes its still possible on an AMD board, and Physx at x4 is fine. You shouldn't see any kind of frame loss whatsoever...

the answer to your question is pretty obvious after reading [H]'s 16x/16x vs 4x/4x sli review.
4x is plenty of bandwidth still. there is a performance drop vs a faster slot, but work with what you've got. there's no reason to worry about 4x for physX.
Either way, its better than no physx card.

The 4x slot the OP is refering to is likely on the p55 chipset. If this is the case, this is a much more restricted setup than the HardOCP test conditions:

1. On p55, if the configuration is 16x plus 4x, the 4x slot is running at PCIe 1.0 speed. That is half the bandwidth of the worst-case HardOCP review (just 1GB/s bidirectional).

But PhysX will run just fine in a lower-bandwidth slot.
 
There are 4x cards such as multi-port ethernet, fibre channel, and raid adapters that can utilize the 4x bandwidth.

Physx should run fine.
