X38 vs P35 or something different?

One of the ram modules in my current computer has broken so I'm thinking about upgrading, rather than buying a new stick of ddr when ddr2 is as cheap as it is.
I have decided on a Core 2 Duo E6420, but I can't decide on what chipset/motherboard to use.
Does the PCI Express x16 2.0 on the X38 make it worth the higher price, I'm not planning on upgrading my gf 7800 until the gf 9X series arrives?

we should ask about a specific models, yes X48 could be a binned X38 but that’s just the chipset, the motherboard contains other parts than the NB and I don’t think a big manufacturer (like Asus) will just replace the NB, I think X48 will be an opportunity for them to fix any bugs they found in the older model and do some improvements here and there (I hope)

Since we can now say that the Asus Maximus Formula is the X38 king right now, it’ll be a wise decision to aim for the next model of this board, which is the Rampage Formula (not the DDR3 Rampage Extreme)

the Rampage Formula seems a good choice and I’ll not be surprised if it turned to be the next king

you can see it for sale on some European sites (reserve) I think the price was around $350, and I think (and hope) it’ll be available before the end of March

Why have you decided on the E6420? The E6xxx is the old, discontinued Intel lineup.

The current Intel lineup is E8xxx. You can get a 3GHz E8400 for the same price as the 2.13GHz E6420. It has more cache, SSE4, and other performance improvements.

Unless you need SLI, a P35 motherboard is all you need. The Gigabyte DS3L is a good choice at <$90.
 
Well I don't like Asus too much, I should have said that, but I guess I'll buy the rampage anyway, it seems good.
I was offered to buy a cheap 6420, that's why I more or less have/had decided on that one.
