X2 4400+ too hot!

I am excited to install my new X2 4400+ today, but the cpu temp is too high for me to feel safe (or to start trying OC). I am wondering if there's something that i did wrong, or if i was expecting too much from my case + heatsink + airflow setup etc.

Before i installed the X2, i had a winchester 3200+, at ambient temperautre of about 23, the idle temp is about 40, with load temp of 53, a bit high but i can live with that.

Now with the X2 4400+, it idles at around 40 as well (23 ambient), and the temp with 1 instance of prime95 is about 53, but when i run the second instance, it goes up to 60. It's still within limit, but i am worried when the ambient temperature gets higher, or when i play games which mean the gfx card will give more heat, it may fry the cpu.

I tried putting the 7000 AlCU fan at 12V, and the load temp for 2 prime95 goes down to 55. But it's too noisy at 12V...

Assuming i didn't install the heatsink wrong and the reported temperature is reliable, what can i do to improve the temp? I realize my case (sonata) does not have the best airflow, and that i have plenty of hot components in my case. Would a better heatsink like the 7700, the XP-120 etc help to reduce the load temp by say 8-10 degrees? Any other suggestions?

Any advice is highly appreicated. Thanks!!

System Config:
Antec Sonata, Seasonic S12-430,2x Nexus 120mm (front and case),
AMD Athlon64 x2 4400+ (w/ Zalman 7000 Alcu at 5V), Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe (w/ Zalman NB47J), BFG Geforce 7800 GTX OC, Hitachi 7k250 SATA 160GB, Maxtor DM9 IDE 160GB x 2 on RAID 1.

Ya you have bad airflow or bad install of your heatsink. I have a 4400+ also Folding 24/7 and don't break 49C (thats 100% load on both full time) with stock cooling.

My computer room also runs fairly hot and it's also in a crappy case now atm with airflow issues. It's going into a CM Stacker today.

I am water cooling, but my idle is about 3C above case ambient, and about 9C above under load. Is not overclocked, but Asus A8N-SLI deluxe said it was undervolting it a bit by default; changed that to the high end of spec voltage... (bios also was undervolting my ram)

I reinstall my heatsink today and the temp stays the same :(

I ordered my chip from zipzoomfly.. Granted my airflow is not superb as i runs my Zalman 7000 AlCu at 5V . (Well the load temp goes to 55C if i switch the fan to full speed at 12V.. still quite high). I am wondering if a bigger heatsink like the XP-120 or the Scythe Ninja can give me temp as low as 50..

ColStripe: What's ur idle temp? Is the stock cooler noisy? And is it thermally controlled? (Slower fan speed at idle?)

Little hot in my comp room today even with AC blasting (97F outside!). But it idles around 38-39C. The stock fan is not therm controlled - runs full all the time. The machine is 100% full load 24/7 so it needs the cooling anyways. As far as noisy goes, I hear the 7800GTX fan over the CPU fan, so I don't think it's too bad.

x2's normally run a little hotter than their single core counterparts. Alot of people over at xtremesystems.org have been taking their IHS off and getting 10c drops in temps, Maybe AMD didn't make new IHS's to fit the new dual cores and they are suffering from bad contact.

Pop out that stock rear fan and put in up front. Then replace the rear with:

Running about half speed you should notice a huge case temp drop with very little noise increase. I have two Sonatas, this cheap mod works great.

Oh, while your buying stuff pick up an XP-90 and a Thermal Take Cat-90 to go with it. Between the new rear fan and new HSF you should be no higher then low 40's at full load.

Luck.
