X2-4200 folding slow,need help

my x2 4200 is folding very slow, for compariosn my intel duo notebook completed almost 7 workunits and my x2 desktop almost 2 workunits, what could be wrong with my system?
 
Please list your system, including all info. Hard drive (??rpm) motherboard, overclocked or not, amount of ram, operating system and all runnig processes.
 
x2 4200,1 gb ram, 250Gb HDD, Vista Ultimate, as for processes running there is 59 running.
The two processes i can see for Folding client is called FahCore_78 4,612k and winFAH 4,668k. I hope thats enough info for you.
 
You might need more ram- (SMP)
Due to the processes that you are running you might need more ram. I currently run windows 2k with only the .net installed and the smp (29 processes). See Smp folder in sig.

Since you are folding on two very different systems it's also important we know which run of work units are on each machine, and which client you are using. Not every protien folds at the same speed which makes comairisons tough espcially when it's between AMD and Intel.

FahCore_78 is a standard client, so I have to think that he is running out of memory since my two clients on my E6400 are using 11,500kb. 23,000kb total
 
thanks for your help so far, its early morning here an dthe wife wants me toget of here so ill try to post everything you have requested tommorrow then hopefully i can sort this out.
 
Having Vista and only a Gig of RAM + running the SMP client most likely will suck. RAM is gonna be my first suggestion. Second would be to match your note book and get an Intel processor. :D You might also want to see if your processes are competing with another process for processor time. If you click on the top of the CPU % column, it should sort the processes out to which ones are hitting the processor. That will give you more of an idea.

or, if you're gutsy, try installing vista on the other machine and see if the performance drops to a comparible level but I'd almost garuntee that is the problem vista seems to suck at folding (and pretty much everything else performance-related)

Two words for you, BULL SHIT. I first installed Vista on a stock X-2 3800 and with the SMP client; in VM I still made deadlines. And that was with 512 Meg of ram I might add.

Then I moved Vista over to my Intel Box and still got good times in VM. Now I have made my main box a Vista box permanently and I’m running the SMP Windows Client with no issues.

Vista box is an E6600 at 3.4 with 2 Gigs of RAM. If anything I’ve seen a noticeable increase in performance with Vista.

The fact is the standard clients just plain fold slow even on today’s faster machines. Since you have two dual machines why not just run the new Native SMP clients and enjoy the points increase?;)

thanks everyone, it seems the cpu usage is highest on the folding, however if there is different clients i may try that. on a side note my laptop with the intel is on XP with over a 1.25Gb of ram. my main tower with the amd is definitly starving for ram, but could i just allow more HDD space on vista to use ram to improve performance?
 
i also jsut checked, i am running F@H 5.3 on both machines, I probably should be using the 5.91 smp beta correct, hopefully i will see a huge improvment.

Only use the SMP clients if you meet the following
a) have a multicore / multi cpu machine that is more powerful than Dual AMD Athlon 1.53ghz 1800+

That's what I have and I make deadlines but just soooo barely. It was not consistent enough that I went back to running two correctly configured copies of the regular client. :(
 
anyone here now the proper settings for the smp windows client,,,,and how to change the settings,,because its running but i think i may have used wrong settings.
 
If by version 5.3, you mean 5.03, then your running the Graphical Client (the one that sucks), not to be confused with the GPU Client 5.91 beta 3 or 4.

So delete the version you have and download the SMP 5.91 beta or two of the Console 5.04 versions. ( Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista
"No nonsense" text-only console (with built-in Windows-service-install option))
