I just built a new system with an X2 3800...Sometimes it freezes, sometimes it reboots, and sometimes it just shuts down...It happens when playing avi files, and it also did it while i was converting an avi to dvd with cucusoft avi converter...I have a Btostar TForce4u motherboard, 1 gig of Geil memory, an Antec Truepower 2.0 430watt Power supply. OEM cooling, but used Artic Silver 5. According to the temp gauge on the case it stays around 34C, the highest I have ever seen it go is 38c. It's not overclocked...Does anyone know what could be causing the problem? Thanks for the help!

I was hoping the motherboard would be fine, it has gotten some really good reviews...

Biostar is not the most renowned mobo....but ANY component could go bad or be bad....I have had some cheap mobos that were rock solid, and some that were bad from day one.....

RAM check out okay as well? It could also be a flakey PSU...motherboard is doubtful, but we can't rule that out yet either. You could even have a screwed processor (i got one of those..sucked...i kept assuming that processors are the one piece that don't come out bad).

Blah..the longer I do this, the more possibilities I see...

I'd check memory first and then possibly testing rails with a multimeter.

Extra test components would be ideal in this situation as well....got a friend?

Any mobo can go bad. I have high dollar boards, budget boards and cheap boards. In defense
of the biostar, it is one of the highest rated boards, when you look at what you get for the $$. I have yet to find a negative review for them. And personal experience the board rocks. Have done everything I could have wanted. My 2 cents.

Like those guys said...until you do some basic trouble shooting...you have quite a few possibilities....I still don't think Biostar is tha great of a mobo....just my 2 cents...

Ram, any ram, can go bad or have issues...as can cpu's.....cpu's are alot less likely though....ram and mobo troubles are quite often one of the biggest factors....

I left my comp on all night as I usually do, just downloading some things, nothing intensive. I woke up and my comp had restarted...I'm about to run Memtest on it. After that, what should be my next step? Thanks for all the input!

If memtest passes.....run some prime and watch the rig.....have you been on it when it reboots/crashes/freezes? Have you looked in the error logs to see if there is anything shown? Will it reboot/crash/freeze when running in safe mode or only when you are in normal operation? Have you checked your BIOS version to see if there is a newer version that might have some fixes? What voltage are you running the cpu at? Try bumping the vcore one small step, and also bump the ram up a notch or two. Some ram needs a bit more than the normal voltage to be stable....

There are lots of things to check....

Is that all the hardware involved? Or is there more? Is there a video card, sound card, tv tuner, etc.?? Do you know what your ram timings are ? Did you ever go into the bios and expiriment with overclocking and forget to set everything back to default? Is anything shorted out against the motherboard, lose a screw down in the case? Do you have a different PSU to try?

Okay...I ran 2 passes on MemTest and it passed both times...My CPU Voltage was 1.350V I bumped it up to 1.40V, my Mem Voltage was 2.60 I bumped it up to 2.8. My mem timing are CAS2.5-4-4-8. The other hardware I have is 3 hard drives, a dvd burner and a GeForce4 MX440 AGP card. It's an old card, but I don't play games on my PC. I do have the power supply that cam with the case. The way the case is set up it's a pain to use that PSU because the cables are too short on it. Any other suggestions? My motherboard has an auto-overclock option, and also a bios save function. Should I try that, and then save my bios so I can switch back if I need to?? Thanks for all of your help...
